Applications are invited for the post of postdoctoral research assistant in the Department of Drama, Theatre and Dance.

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research assistant to join a new AHRC- funded research project, Civic Theatre: A Place for Towns. The successful applicant will be based at Royal Holloway, University of London and join a small team of researchers at the University of Manchester and project partners. The postholder will work closely with Dr Louise Ashley, Co-Investigator, and will lead a strand of research examining the organisational cultures of theatres and the policy environments in which they operate. In a context where theatre professionals are acknowledged to lack diversity in terms of ethnicity and social class and have relatively narrow cultural tastes, the study will ask who is included and excluded from these narratives, perspectives and platforms?

We invite applicants who are educated to PhD level with experience of research in the cultural and creative sector and ideally, a specific interest in matters of equality, diversity and inclusion. The successful applicant will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of innovative research methods, the use of social media in research, and an ability to publish outputs in different forms (academic journals, industry-focused reports, blogs etc). You will also have the potential to organise events that bring together academics, theatre professionals and community groups.

You will have bespoke opportunities for professional development, and welcomed as a valued part of Royal Holloway’s research environment. We will encourage you to take opportunities for related paid work, including teaching as it arises. The project will support relevant professional development courses, conference attendance and travel (as permitted) as well as online events to disseminate research and build research networks. You will be able to build a portfolio of skills with external agencies within the framework of the research project.

In return we offer a highly competitive rewards and benefits package including:

  • Generous annual leave entitlement
  • Training and Development opportunities
  • Pension Scheme with generous employer contribution
  • Various schemes including Cycle to Work, Season Ticket Loans and help with the cost of Eyesight testing.
  • Free parking

The post is based in Egham, Surrey and in Bedford Square in London where possible, with home-working online.
