You will be part of a team on the RCUK-Global Challenges Research Fund BRECcIA project, Building Research Capacity for sustainable water and food security In drylands of sub-saharan Africa. BRECcIA comprises 8 Universities located in 4 countries (Malawi, Kenya, Ghana and the UK), as well as partnerships with 7 international organisations.  In addition to scientific research, a key focus for BRECcIA has been on building research capability and capacity.  Since November 2017, BRECcIA has held a series of events and training interventions, both online and face-to-face, for a range of early career researchers and Co-Investigators/country leads. As the research programme enters the final phase of research, we now need to focus on evaluation, dissemination and assessing the impact of our activities.

Working with the Capacity Development Co-Investigator, you will lead an evaluation project that entails reviewing existing information, gathering new data/information on the overall experience of BRECcIA’s researchers, as well as analysing and assessing these data for impact.  The post holder will design and implement survey questionnaires and conduct semi-structured interviews and/or focus groups to capture what has been successful and useful for researchers in BRECcIA.  We are especially interested in exploring the efficacy of the capability and capacity building activities of the project and capturing how team members may have changed their working practices and developed as professional researchers and future leaders. In addition, you will work closely with researchers based in a range of institutions and with our partner organisations to identify the key activities and mechanisms that enable successful international collaborative research partnerships. The findings will contribute to briefing documents, a toolkit and published outputs.

The role would be of particular interest to a recently submitted or completed doctoral researcher or postdoctoral researcher with experience in qualitative data collection and analysis, and who is looking to move into a professional development/capacity building role.

The successful candidate must have a PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in a social science area.

Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

You should submit your completed online application form at https://jobs.soton.ac.uk. The application deadline will be midnight on the closing date stated above. If you need any assistance, please call Hannah Farrance (Recruitment Team) on +44 (0) 23 8059 2750, or email recruitment@soton.ac.uk. Please quote reference 1526421WR-R on all correspondence.
