The University of Helsinki is among the leading multidisciplinary research universities in the world. Measured in number of students and teachers, the Faculty of Science at the University of Helsinki is the largest science faculty in Finland. The Department of Physics is a large and multidisciplinary department in the Faculty of Science that offers the most varied university programme in the physical sciences in Finland. Currently, the department employs about 200 people, of which 2 are academy professors, 23 professors, 4 assistant professors and 29 are university lecturers or university researchers.

The Helsinki Institute of Physics is a physics research institute that is operated jointly by the University of Helsinki, Aalto University, the University of Jyväskylä, the Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology, and the Tampere University. The research activity at the institute covers an extensive range of subjects in theoretical physics and experimental subatomic physics. The institute is responsible for the Finnish research collaboration with CERN. Also, the institute coordinates the Finnish contribution to the FAIR laboratory (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) currently under construction in Darmstadt, Germany.

The Department of Physics and the Helsinki Institute of Physics invite applications for a

UNIVERSITY LECTURER IN PARTICLE PHYSICS INSTRUMENTATION

starting from 1st January 2022 (or as agreed). The position is joint between the Department of Physics and the Helsinki Institute of Physics, and it will be based in the Division of Particle and Astrophysics of the Department of Physics.

The university lecturer will be responsible for developing the teaching of particle physics instrumentation at the University of Helsinki with the aim of offering courses, hands-on laboratory exercises and thesis works at all levels. The university lecturer will contribute significantly to the Finnish commitments in the upgrade of the CMS instrumentation. The experiments at LHC will be thoroughly upgraded over the next 5 years for the high-luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) phase. The University of Helsinki has significant responsibilities at CMS experiment, which will be operational at least until the late 2030’s, and it is anticipated that there will be new upgrade stages for the experiment.

The teaching duties of the selected university lecturer will focus on the Master’s Programme in Particle Physics and Astrophysical sciences. The teaching duties will be complemented by supervision of students, and research duties in instrumentation for particle physics experiments, in particular for the CMS experiment.

To be successful in the position, the candidate must have a background and research experience in particle physics, experience in teaching and supervision of students, and experience of detectors for particle physics experiments. When assessing the qualifications of each candidate, attention will be paid to scientific publications and other research results, experience in supervising students and younger scientists, teaching experience and pedagogical training, the ability to produce learning materials, other teaching merits and, if necessary, a teaching demonstration. Further attention will be paid to the ability to collaborate, experience of working in large international research collaborations, the candidates’ mobility and activities within the research community. We anticipate the candidates to describe how their research is naturally linked to the particle physics research programs at the Department of Physics and the Helsinki Institute of Physics.

An appointee to the position of the university lecturer shall hold an applicable doctoral degree and be able to provide high-quality teaching based on research and to supervise theses and dissertations. According to the Government Decree on Universities, university lecturers are required to be proficient in Finnish. They must also have at least satisfactory spoken and written skills in Swedish. Foreign citizens, non-native Finnish citizens or citizens who have not been educated in Finnish or Swedish may be exempted from this requirement without a separate application.

The salary is based on the salary system of Finnish universities. The salary range is from 3700 – 5000 euros per month.
