About the position

La Trobe Art Institute is La Trobe University’s centre for contemporary art, curatorial practice and cultural collections. Based in Bendigo, the Curator will support the development of arts and culture across La Trobe University's Victorian campuses.

The successful candidate will research and deliver contemporary art exhibitions that engage regional audiences and build national profile and influence. Primary responsibilities are curatorial and include liaison between people and organisations, production, development of public programs, writing, marketing and promotion. The position extends learning and appreciation of the University’s art collections through interpretation.

Skills and Experience

To be considered for this position, you will have:

  • A sound knowledge of contemporary art, art history and theory and a demonstrated ability to bring together artists, arts workers and collections to deliver innovative curatorial projects.
  • A demonstrated network of professional relationships in the arts and culture sector.
  • A sound practical understanding of collections management principles and practices.
  • Well-developed analytical skills with the proven ability to adapt to new situations and develop creative solutions in terms of contemporary art exhibitions, collections management and marketing.
  • The ability to represent La Trobe Art Institute in a variety of public settings, especially to promote exhibitions, public programs and collections.
  • Completion of a relevant degree and demonstrated depth of expertise developed through extensive experience and application.
  • Demonstrated capacity to organise work effectively and efficiently and deliver outputs in a timely manner.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated customer service focus and solution orientated approach.
