Applications are invited for appointment as Tenure-Track Associate Professor/Assistant Professor in Healthy Cities in the Department of Urban Planning and Design (Ref. 508707), to commence on February 1, 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter. Appointment will be made on a three-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal and consideration for tenure before the expiry of a second three-year fixed-term contract. Exceptionally outstanding candidates may be considered for appointment on tenure terms.
The Department of Urban Planning and Design (DUPAD) is an internationally leading planning school with excellence in teaching and research in urban studies, urban planning and urban science. Its vision is to offer leadership in intellectual and methodological developments in the field, as well as making high-level impacts on urban planning, management and policy developments in Hong Kong, Mainland China, the Belt and Road Region and further afield. The DUPAD has a 40-year history of blending urban science, planning, design and policy analytics and has one of the strongest groups of urban data scientists in the world. It is also active in interdisciplinary research, with strong links with geography, public health, real-estate and urban economics, transport, architecture, social sciences and environmental science groups in HKU and other universities.
Entering its 40th anniversary, the Department is one of the most well-established and globally respected urban research centres in the Asia-Pacific region. It offers a range of taught undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, and M.Phil./Ph.D research programmes in urban studies, urban planning, urban design, urban analytics, housing management, transport, and healthy cities. The Department seeks a rising scholar with demonstrated potential in research, teaching and knowledge exchange in the field of health geography, public health, healthy city planning and design, built environment epidemiology or other cognate areas.
Applicants should possess a Ph.D. degree in relevant fields, a good general background in urban research, and be able to link health issues with urban studies/urban planning. The appointee is expected to substantially contribute to a new Master’s degree programme in Healthy City Design, which may be offered at HKU’s new Shenzhen campus as well as in Hong Kong. A track record of research in the Asia-Pacific region would be an advantage but is not essential. Experience in winning external competitive grants and the ability to establish connections with government and industry would be desirable. Applicants will be considered for appointment as Associate Professor/Assistant Professor based on experience.
A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits. At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income. The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15% of basic salary. Housing benefits will be provided as applicable.
