At the University of Southampton, our aim is to change the world for the better, bringing together realms of academic research, creativity and knowledge to have a truly collaborative, immersive and ground-breaking impact. We care about the challenges that humanity is facing, and work to support others on a local and global scale.
In the Office of Development & Alumni Relations (ODAR), our job is to galvanise our community to solve these challenges and to make a difference. Would you like this to be your job too?
About the role
The Donor Relations Manager will play a crucial role at a pivotal moment in the history of philanthropy at Southampton. Managing a growing team as we head into the University’s first institution-wide campaign, the role will shape the way our community of donors are thanked, recognised and celebrated. Through taking strategic responsibility for the University’s relationships with all philanthropic donors, the Donor Relations Manager will work collaboratively with the fundraising team to drive income generation that supports world-class education and research.
The role will lead the Donor Relations team to create and execute a multi-layered strategy to steward donors at all levels, implementing a programme of activity to articulate the impact of their philanthropy through creative and compelling communications and events. This unique role has oversight of a wide range of cross-team activities which contribute to an engaging donor experience, ranging from the management of donor data to the creation of bespoke “magic moments” of stewardship for the University’s most significant benefactors. This role ensures our donors are recognised as an essential part of the University’s community, with every gift and donor treated in a special way.
About you
With a passion and proven track record for delivering an excellent experience for donors, patrons, trustees and/or customers, you will be a skilled project manager who has the ability to lead a strategic plan with multiple stakeholder groups and demanding deadlines. You will have a flair for creativity and be adept at finding bespoke opportunities to make our donors feel valued for their gifts. You will bring a natural enthusiasm for the power of philanthropy and be able to translate this into a programme of meaningful recognition, communications and events for our donor community. Your previous experience will ensure you recognise that Donor Relations requires a balance of acute attention to detail, exceptional communication skills and institution-wide collaboration to provide the best experience for our donors. You will have a desire to play a central role in a team that is enabling our donors to make a transformative impact on the world through their generosity.
About Us
We are planning our first University-wide fundraising and engagement campaign. Together, we want to raise more money and to engage more alumni and friends with Southampton so that we can change the world. And with the full support and investment of our University leadership, we are growing our team over the next few years. We are so excited.
We need people with intellectual curiosity and people who have different ideas. We need people with direct experience or transferable skills and the interest and drive to take on a new challenge. We are actively determined to welcome a diverse group of colleagues into our inclusive team. Every day will be different, you will meet incredible people and the rewards will be huge.
Imagine fundraising for medical technologies that could cure cancer or dementia. Or engaging a volunteer who can help a student improve their graduate prospects. Or connecting alumni around the world and reawakening important friendships and partnerships. Or seeing the look on a student’s face when they learn they will be the first person in their family to attend University—because of a scholarship that you secured. That could be you.
The only thing holding us back is more talented people. This could be a career-defining and remarkable opportunity.
Help us change the world. Join us.
