Research Fellow - Re-Imagining Engineering Design (RIED)

Job description

The School of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering at Queen’s University, Belfast is seeking a Research Fellow to join our Biohaviour team and be part of our exciting programme - Re-Imagine Engineering Design (RIED).

The research will be carried out as part of the EPSRC funded project – “RIED - Growing Radical Cyber-Physical-Socio Phenotypes” which is led by Queen's University Belfast in partnership with Loughborough University, University of York and ten major UK industrial companies including Airbus, Rolls-Royce and Spirit Aero systems.

The successful candidate will be responsible for developing new ideas and concepts to enable integration of design and manufacturing systems. You will also investigate new bioinspired geometry-based design systems, turning the emerging principles into a working prototype system, researching the use of VR/AR technologies to support design, and enabling the linking through to the desired manufacturing processes.

The successful candidate must have and your CV/Cover letter should clearly demonstrate you have:

  • 2.1 Honours Degree (or equivalent) in Aerospace, Mechanical, Manufacturing Engineering or closely related discipline.
  • Normally have or be about to obtain a PhD in Mechanical, Aerospace or Manufacturing Engineering.
  • At least 3 years relevant research experience to include: 
    • Undertaking research in the area of design and manufacturing, or relevant industrial experience, including demonstrable experience in design systems.
    • Experience in software development.
    • A proven track record of using experimental models to carry out analyses, critical evaluations, and interpretations of experimental data as relevant to the research project
    • Working effectively as part of a research team in the development and promotion of the research theme
  • Strong publication record, commensurate with stage of career.

Fixed term contract posts are available for the stated period in the first instance but in particular circumstances may be renewed or made permanent subject to availability of funding.
