Job description

The Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery & Palliative Care (NMPC) is offering an outstanding opportunity for a talented individual who wishes to advance  education and research in midwifery and maternity to join our faculty.

The Faculty ranks no 2 in the world for its research and education (QS rankings). The 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF2014), rated over 90% of our research as world class or world leading, and 84% of our impact was world leading. Our applied clinical and health research transforms health, quality of life and care across nursing, midwifery, palliative and end of life care, rehabilitation and related clinical, health and social sciences. Teams address complex, multi- and interdisciplinary health and social challenges. Our research is carried out locally, nationally and internationally, and globally, supported by NIHR, UKRI, EU and others. Our Faculty has around 3,000 undergraduate, postgraduate taught and research students, with a growing international intake. Our vision is to develop a blueprint for the integration of education and research to improve student experience, transform clinical care and build capability including in midwifery. This role is a core part of this ambition. The postholder will deliver and lead education in the Faculty, especially relevant to midwifery, and, if on a research and teaching contract, will collaborate on and deliver high quality sustainable research.

The postholder will join an  established team of midwifery educationalists in the Department of Midwifery led by Dr Sam Bassett. They will take on leadership of the midwifery programmes. The Faculty also has active collaborations with the Institute of Women and Children’s Health in the School of Life Course Sciences (SoLCS) of King’s College London and King’s Health Partners, making King’s one of the largest centres of research and education in maternal care in Europe. A new Clinical Academic Training Office is being developed at King’s to help foster clinical academics in their careers.

The Faculty delivers innovative and creative evidence-based education as part of continuing personal and professional development to a large number of trusts and independent health care organisations across London.  Clinical experience for undergraduate and post-graduate pre-registration midwifery students is provided in partnership with leading NHS Trusts in London.

This post will be offered on an indefinite contract

Key responsibilities

  • Play a key role in the Faculty and King’s undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training, focussed on the programmes, especially educational content outlined above and below. This will include module and programme leadership (for AEP pathway), developing and delivering high quality innovative education and education and relevant materials, including incorporating King’s and Faculty research, and generating excellent student feedback.
  • Have a clear forward plan for sustaining and enhancing Faculty education, PhD supervision, and research consistent with the Faculty strategy, including to increase research / evidence informed education, multi- and interdisciplinary endeavours, and improved student experience
  • [If on R&T contract] Contribute to and develop a sustainable, high quality applied health care research programme in areas core to one or more of the Faculty’s research Divisions or Institute and relevant to the educational focus of this post. You will work with relevant health care, charity and industry/ commercial research partners.

Main other responsibilities:

  • Actively lead the midwifery programme at King’s contributing to teaching in midwifery and across the Faculty where appropriate.
  • Work in collaboration and partnership with key stakeholders, institutions, and organisations
  • Contribute to the planning and development of the Faculty’s education programmes and modules, including lecture planning, preparation and scholarship, assessment, and feedback of students’ work.
  • Act as a Personal tutor, Link Lecturer and Academic Assessor.
  • Supervise MSc and BSc Dissertation/Projects and where applicable PhD (can be second or third supervisor).
  • Actively participate in Curriculum Development, team building, peer review and quality improvement initiatives of the Faculty and King’s, including own development and embracing changes in the field

Research (if Research and Teaching contract):  

  • Contribute to the academic work of the Faculty, working with colleagues and clinical teams, with the aim of obtaining significant research funding and conducting research at an international and world-leading standard according to King’s performance framework
  • Collaborate on, assist with and increasingly lead externally funded peer-reviewed collaborative research projects, programmes and fellowships, including winning funding from NIHR, UKRI, industrial/commercial funding and prestigious charities as co-investigator or Principal investigator.
  • Form and grow external collaborations to enhance the quality of reach of our research programmes, linking with world leading academics and groups in related fields.
  • Supervise, co-supervise and nurture clinical and non-clinical researchers (including PhD students and fellowships) to build the field for the future.
  • Publish research findings in high quality peer view journals, with 1 – 2 publications that are internationally excellent or world leading each year.

Research / Scholarship (if Academic Education contract):  

  • Co-author on one quality paper for a professional or academic journal or a book chapter relevant to Faculty research programmes or education innovations.
  • Actively collaborate with Faculty research themes to enhance research informed education and evidence-based practice.
  • Act as a collaborator to design innovations or projects to enhance research and integration with education.
  • Contribute to staff development activities e.g. presentations, sh Registerable teaching qualification aring good practice. 

The above list of responsibilities may not be exhaustive, and the post holder will be required to undertake such tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be expected within the scope and grading of the post. A Lecturer (AEP) will devote 80% of their time to education, delivering and leading undergraduate, postgraduate and post qualification courses. 

 

Essential criteria

  1. Educated to Masters Level.  
  2. Current professional registration as midwife with the UK NMC
  3. Excellent written, verbal and digital communication skills, able to communicate with a wide range of audiences, with diverse levels of knowledge and expertise, and of differing professional backgrounds
  4. Track record of delivering and developing high quality, relevant teaching and education, including in curriculum development, simulation and digital, remote, or blended learning,
  5. Sound knowledge of quantitative and qualitative research methods to be able to supervise BSc and where appropriate MSc/MRes student projects, including standard analysis 
  6. Knowledge and clinical credibility in midwifery, including experience of working as a midwife within an educational leadership role    
  7. Vision and appropriate plans for deliverable future education  
  8. A flexible, energetic and well-organized self-starter able to engage actively with students, team members, the wider College and other potential collaborators in developing a programme of teaching
  9. Commitment to improving equality, diversity and inclusion in the Faculty.

Additional Essential criteria (Research and Teaching)

  • PhD in relevant topic 
  • Track record of peer-review publication and presentations that demonstrate international excellence or are world leading in terms of originality, rigor and significance in areas relevant to Faculty research themes. 
  • Evidence of ability to secure research grant funding, demonstrated by previous experience and track record, involvement in research active teams, responsibilities, plans, awareness of funding schemes relevant to Faculty

  • Registerable teaching qualification

Desirable criteria

  1. Able to lead and manage change, and motivate others, colleagues, and students 
  2. Experience of delivering improving education in an academic environment, and using appropriate systems
  3. Evidence of delivering impact in research or teaching
