Our growing teams are teaching, exploring and practising in some of the most exciting areas in the field of computing and the processing of digital media. Our research groups include the Digital Media Technology Lab (DMT Lab, specialising in HCI/UX research around augmented/virtual reality systems, accessibility and assistive technology, multimodal interfaces, future networks, and audio/music information retrieval), data science and big data analytics, and cybersecurity and digital forensics.

We are a practice-based school, making our teaching and research relevant to the evolving market for computer skills by partnering with local and global enterprise in areas such as smart cities, medical applications, the media production industry, and IoT applications. Our students are encouraged to work on existing innovative research projects or in partnership with external industry organisations to tackle real-world issues. We work in a collaborative and cross disciplinary culture, where interacting freely across the school and with colleagues is encouraged to gain a unique insight into impactful problem domains. 

We invite applications to join our integrated teaching and research teams in the Department for DMT as a Lecturer. For this role we are particularly seeking applicants who bring skills in Digital Media Technology with a strong technical background. 

Main Duties and Responsibilities  

  • Collaborating with colleagues in the DMT Lab to create high quality research leading to publications in reputable journals and conference proceedings, and to assist in developing bids and partnerships for research funding. 
  • Teaching as a member of the Digital Media Technology team in a variety of settings from small group tutorials to large lectures at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Providing an excellent student experience through innovating on best practice for learning, teaching, support and assessment methods.
  • Supervise student projects at undergraduate level. 
  • Lead in the design and development of high quality, up-to-date modules.
  • Setting and marking of assessments and providing constructive feedback and feedforward. 
  • Participate in and orchestrate outreach activities to aid in recruitment. 
  • Ability to build contacts internally and externally to conduct knowledge transfer activities. 
  • Work closely with industry partners to realise the Department’s aim to be an international authority in both research and practice.
  • Acting in accord with the University’s strategy, policy and procedures. 
  • Embody the University’s strategy and values, demonstrating behaviours that align to those values.

Skills and Experience  

Essential 

  • Hold a PhD in an applied technical computing subject (e.g. Computer Science, Computer Vision, Human-Computer Interaction, etc.), or have equivalent industry experience.
  • Excellent knowledge and experience of technical development in an applied computing field.
  • A proven record of research and research publications in leading international conferences/journals.
  • Experience of collaboration across your area of practice. 
  • Evidence of teaching in higher education or have presented to technical audiences in an industry setting. 
  • Excellent team working and communication skills.

Desirable 

  • Experience of applied computing (e.g. HCI, UX, Computer Vision, Web systems) in an industry context.
  • Expertise in programming languages and standard frameworks (e.g. C#, C++, Python, Vue.js, Angular, React, etc.). 
  • To be a member of, or to have submitted for fellowship of the Higher Education Academy.
  • Experience of income generation, research funding and knowledge transfer.
