VETERINARIAN (POST LEVEL 7)
SMALL ANIMAL SURGERY – SPAY CLINICIAN (ONE POST)

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful candidate will actively participate in the following areas:

  • Manage the sterilisation clinic;
  • Student preparation and training in the skills laboratory;
  • Supervise anaesthetic induction and maintenance and manage complications;
  • Supervise surgical procedure and manage all complications;
  • Provide guidance to students during surgery;
  • Assist with developing training material related to the above;
  • Assist with marketing the service to general public
  • Networking with relevant industry stakeholders;
  • Community engagement;
  • Administrative and other duties as delegated by the Head of Department; and
  • Academic self-development.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • A BVSc- or BVMCh-degree or an equivalent veterinary qualification;
  • Registration with the SAVC at the time of appointment or eligibility for registration within a reasonable time;
  • Five years general small animal private practice experience, including experience in small animal abdominal surgery; and
  • Evidence of continued professional development or continued education development.

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

  • Good language and communication (written and verbal) skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; and
  • Generic teaching competence including proficiency with presentation, word-processing and spreadsheet software.

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

  • Eight years general small animal private practice;
  • Tertiary teaching and mentoring experience; and
  • Participation in extracurricular academic activities or events.

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
