The Area

The ANU Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics (RSAA) is the leading research school in Australia in the field of astronomy and astrophysics.

Our staff and students have made major contributions to astronomy, mapping the structure and formation of the Milky Way, discovering planets orbiting other stars, measuring dark matter both within our Galaxy and in the wider Universe, and discovering the accelerating expansion of the Universe.

Our astronomers include winners of the Prime Minister’s Prize for Science and the Nobel Prize.

At our administrative home at the Mount Stromlo Observatory we host the Advanced Instrumentation and Technology Centre which is a national facility established to support the development of the next generation of instruments for astronomy and space science.

The vibrant and diverse astronomical research community at RSAA has access to a broad array of facilities, including optical telescopes operated by ANU at Siding Spring Observatory, located in the Warrumbungle region of New South Wales and national radio telescopes (ATCA, Parkes, ASKAP, MWA). RSAA has access to excellent computational facilities through the National Computational Infrastructure supercomputer and in-house compute clusters.

Position overview

The Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for All Sky Astrophysics in 3 Dimensions (ASTRO 3D) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow. ASTRO 3D spans six universities and is led from the Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics (RSAA) at the Australian National University (ANU) in Canberra. ASTRO 3D is seeking an early career researcher to join a dynamic team at RSAA working on research programs led by ASTRO 3D CI, Dr Emily Wisnioski.

The successful applicant will work as part of the MAGPI survey team (https://magpisurvey.org/) to explore the physical processes driving galaxy kinematic, morphological, and chemical evolution. This position is focused in particular on making evolutionary connections from early galaxy formation and subsequent evolution during the cosmic decline of star-formation to local galaxies including the Milky Way. The research will require working with optical integral field spectroscopic data, multi-wavelength data products, as well as designing and carrying out follow-up observing campaigns. However, applications interested in making theoretical connections or using mock observations are also encouraged to apply.

The appointee will work under the supervision of Dr. Emily Wisnioski, joining one of the most active research institutes in Australia with access to state-of-the art instrumentation and computing facilities.
