CRUK Advanced Clinician Scientist Fellowship - Research Technician

The School of Cancer Sciences in Southampton, with over 100 scientists, clinicians and associated staff, has a long and distinguished record in the study of Cancer. 

You are invited to apply for the post of Research Technician to work in the School of Cancer Sciences’ Laboratories based at the Southampton General Hospital. You will work as part of the Underwood research team, focussing on understanding the ecosystem of oesophageal cancer. The post is funded by a CRUK Advanced Clinician Scientist Fellowship, awarded to Professor Tim Underwood, immediate past Head of School. The candidate will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team investigating the biology of oesophageal cancer; providing technical laboratory support and will perform single-cell based transcriptomic analysis, 3D model system development (organoids) and spatial transcriptomics. Day-to-day supervision and support will be provided by Dr Zoe Walters (Lecturer in Translational Epigenomics) and 2 post-doctoral research fellows, who are also funded on the CRUK Fellowship.

As someone with proven relevant work experience you will be required to carry out the prescribed tasks with minimal direct supervision after the initial training period. You will need to be highly organised, and be able to work well under pressure, whilst remaining health and safety focused. You will be fully-focused to provide timely and efficient laboratory support for this research programme. 

The successful candidate will work within a dynamic, productive and friendly team of clinicians, bioinformaticians and, molecular/cellular biologists and clinical scientists within the Oesophageal Cancer programme and across the School of Cancer Sciences based at Southampton General Hospital. Your work on this project will have important implications for the clinical management of patients, including the development of better methods of patient stratification.

Previous experience of working in the Life-sciences environment within a laboratory is essential.

This post will be based within the Cancer Research UK Centre and Centre for Cancer Immunology at the Southampton General Hospital campus, occupying modern, well-equipped, purpose-built laboratories, with support from clinical and laboratory-based colleagues.
