Applications are invited for one full-time permanent appointment at the Lecturer level in the Sociology Department, University of Cape Town. The Department is a leading centre for sociological studies in Africa. Information about the Department can be found at http://www.sociology.uct.ac.za. Although there is no preferred area of specialisation, the applicant must demonstrate synergies with the department’s vision of critical and transformative pedagogy and curriculum, where a strong emphasis is placed on social justice, inequality and development in Africa. It is hoped that the successful candidate for this permanent post will commence duties by January 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter

Requirements:

  • A PhD in Sociology or a cognate discipline for appointment. Exceptional candidates nearing the completion of PhD may also be considered for the position.
  • A university training in one or more courses in advanced social science statistics.
  • Undergraduate and/or postgraduate teaching experience.
  • Experience and competence in use and application of advanced quantitative research methods and statistical analysis in applicants’ own research.

Recommendation

  • A proven record of high-quality teaching at a university level

Responsibilities:

  • Teach at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  • Teach quantitative social science methods to masters level, including multivariate analysis.
  • Supervise postgraduate student research.
  • Undertake and publish own research.
  • Carry out administrative responsibilities at departmental level as required.

Expectations:

  • Strong empirical grounding in their fields of specialization, a collaborative spirit, theoretical fluency, and ability and willingness to develop and teach critical and imaginative courses beyond their immediate research fields.
  • An active publication profile, a proven research track record

  • One writing sample of no more than 30 pp. (for example, an article, conference paper or excerpt drawn from a dissertation chapter).
  • An original proposal for a six-week lecture course intended for final-year undergraduates in Social Research Methods. A course proposal may include:
  • A title
  • A short 150-word introduction to the nature, contents and aims of the course, indicating the main questions, the types of study materials, and the skills involved.
  • Sub-themes expressed clearly in the titles of weekly lectures.
