An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Global Musculoskeletal Health Team at the Medical Research Council Lifecourse Epidemiology Centre (MRC LEc), University of Southampton. The MRC LEC mission is to promote human health using lifecourse epidemiological methods, integrating observational evidence, understanding of mechanism and implementation of intervention studies. 

The MRC LEC, University of Southampton, is at the international forefront of musculoskeletal epidemiology, with full MRC funding secured 2021 to 2026. It has an internationally competitive track record in both observational and intervention studies, and well-established links with the University's Institute of Developmental Science, NIHR Nutrition Biomedical Research Centre and University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust.  

The successful applicant will be responsible for assisting with the Fractures in Sub-Saharan Africa: epidemiology, economic impact and ethnography (Fractures-E3) programme of work.  Fractures-E3 is a multi-site programme of work in The Gambia, South Africa and Zimbabwe. The job will involve coordinating workpackage 1 of the project which aims to assess the prevalence of vertebral fractures in 5040 adults across the three countries. The workpackage consists of community-sampling across 5 sites and will involve extensive musculoskeletal phenotyping, as well as assessment of sociodemographic factors, nutrition, physical activity and activities of daily living.  It will be based in Southampton at the MRC-LRC. The job will provide experience of a large, multi-work package programme of multidisciplinary work focussing on the ageing population in sub-Saharan Africa. Although a PhD is not essential, the successful applicant will have demonstrated a strong track record in epidemiology/ biomedical sciences, including an honours degree, excellent interpersonal and organisational skills, and the ability to work successfully as part of a close-knit team. The successful applicant will be expected to develop an area of personal research interest and to travel to the research sites. Where the successful applicant does not already have a PhD., there may be potential for development of a PhD proposal with the University of Southampton. 

This post is offered on a full time, fixed term basis until 31/05/2023. The appointment is for one year in the first instance with extension for a further 1 years 6 month contingent on a satisfactory performance review.
