Job description

We have an exciting opportunity for a part-time Research Assistant (2 days/week) to support our team on a 6-month project focussed on understanding the Transmission of experiences of Racism, Anxiety, and DEpression in families (the TRADE project).   

The TRADE project is funded by Emerging Minds, a UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) Mental Health Network. The successful candidate will join the TRADE team at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience with Dr Yasmin Ahmadzadeh, alongside researchers from both academic (King’s College London; University of Oslo) and charity (Centre for Mental Health) sectors. 

Existing research to understand how anxiety and depression runs in families has been conducted predominantly with participants who identify as white. Questions around the effects of racism on parent and child mental health are missing from mainstream research efforts. The successful Research Assistant will play an instrumental role in our efforts to change this narrative. 

The TRADE project aims are to collate and share knowledge about the intergenerational transmission of race-related trauma, anxiety, and depression; include and amplify the voices of families affected by racism; platform research questions that address affected families’ lived experiences; and shift values, attitudes, and behaviours in research and support sectors, to drive more equitable practice to support mental health within families. 

The advertised role offers an opportunity to develop key research skills in literature review (conducting a rapid evidence assessment), qualitative methods (conducting focus groups and thematic analyses), science communication (to community, academic and clinical stakeholders), and writing an academic paper for publication. The successful candidate will join a team of researchers who are passionate about improving diversity and inclusion among research teams, participants, and consumers. The role will involve opportunities to inspire and support the career development of junior team members and adolescents. 

The role is suited to an individual interested in pursuing a career in research and/or clinical practice; who is keen to gain experience in an institution at the global forefront of mental health research; and who wishes to support the development of anti-racist research methods and evidence-based practise. 

We aim for this research to be executed with and for affected communities, while supporting pathways into academia for the next generation of diverse scientists. Therefore, we encourage applications from those who have lived experience of belonging to a racialised group (i.e., those who identify as belonging to a racially minoritized group in a white majority society). 

This post will be offered on a fixed-term contract for 6 months 

This is a part-time post - 40% full time equivalent (2 days/week)

 

Key responsibilities

Assist with the following tasks:

•  Planning and conducting a literature review (including academic papers, published surveys, government reports, blogs, case studies, written narratives)

•  Recruiting participants (adolescents and parents) for digital focus groups

•  Organising and facilitating digital focus groups (two adolescent, two parent groups) - presenting our reviewed literature to participants and collecting perspectives and ideas for what research must come next.

•  Running digital workshops for adolescent participants to learn about university and career options

•  Working flexible hours on the days when we run digital focus groups and workshops

• Focus group data management and thematic analyses

• Developing verbal and written information to communicate our research questions and findings to key stakeholders (academic researchers, mental health professionals, community groups)

•  Writing and publishing an academic paper

•  Training and supervision of junior team members

•  Attending meetings with collaborators and maintaining regular communication with all team members.

Skills, knowledge, and experience

Essential criteria

 

1.  Undergraduate degree in health / social / psychological science

2. Interest in research relating to racism and mental health

3. Interest in widening opportunities for diversity and inclusion in academia

4. Experience with searching and reviewing literature

5. Experience writing an academic report or paper

6. Understanding of qualitative research methods and data confidentiality

7. Ability to facilitate sensitive group discussions with participants

8. Ability to work collaboratively in a team

9.  Administrative skills essential for record keeping

10. Good attention to detail and high standards of accuracy in all aspects of work

 

Desirable criteria

 

11.  MSc in health / social / psychological science

12. Experience working with adolescent and parent groups

13. Experience of recruiting participants into research studies

14. Experience disseminating / communicating scientific research to a range of audiences

15. Lived experience of belonging to an ethnic group
