Job description

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Service User Research Enterprise (SURE). SURE is a unique academic research group comprised predominantly of researchers with direct experience of neurodiversity, trauma violence and abuse, mental distress, and/or using mental health services. We conduct research from the perspectives of first-hand experiences, developing novel methods to do so. We support the next generation of researchers through PhD supervision and teaching, and connect our research to relevant local and national communities and networks.

 

We are recruiting a lecturer to support the next phase of our research group’s development. The primary role will be to i) contribute to the strategic leadership and direction of SURE ii) develop a portfolio of research relevant to the remit of SURE iii) lead and contribute to educational activities including PhD, Masters and undergraduate supervision and the development of new teaching materials, including a Masters module on survivor led research and iv) lead and contribute to collaboration building and engagement work, including with local and national grassroots communities.

 

The post-holder will work closely with the Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) theme, leading and contributing to the design and supervision of quantitative research studies. As such, we particularly welcome applications from those with quantitative expertise. The post-holder will also work with the Centre for Society and Mental Health, contributing to the development of relevant research projects and the work of the Centre’s Lived Experience Advisory Board.

Key responsibilities

Research

• Develop a funded research portfolio in the post-holder’s specialisms, relevant to the remit of SURE

• Contribute to the development, publication and dissemination of novel methods in experiential research

• Design and oversee a range of quantitative research studies, including within the Biomedical Research Centre Patient and Public Involvement theme

Education

• Engage in teaching activities for at least 20% (FTE) of contracted time

• Supervise PhD, Masters and/or BSc students

• Develop educational activities based on research specialisms

• Lead or contribute to SURE’s planned educational activities, including a Masters module in survivor-led research

Administration

• Undertake administrative duties as required by the role

• Represent SURE on committees, including at Departmental and Institute level

Management

• Manage personal grants, including the recruitment, management and supervision of research staff attached to grants

• Support the management of SURE including strategic direction and formal and informal mentorship of junior staff

Communication and networks

• Communicate internally and externally using clear written, oral and other methods to a range of audiences

• Build and maintain local, national and international collaborations relevant to personal research specialisms and to further SURE’s connections

Skills, knowledge, and experience

This post is suitable for a candidate with a commitment to and understanding of research conducted from a lived experience perspective. The post-holder will have a track record in conducting, publishing and communicating research, and will have clearly articulated research specialisms in an area relevant to the work of SURE. The post-holder may also have experience of teaching and supervision; supporting and developing junior staff; and developing strong collaborations with a range of individuals and groups.

 

Essential criteria

1. PhD, or PhD in submission

2. Direct lived experience in an area/areas relevant to SURE

3. Willingness to contribute to the development of supportive working environments and cultures, and to the growth and leadership of SURE

4. Understanding of and commitment to service user and survivor-controlled research

5. Clear plan for developing a funded research portfolio in chosen specialism/s

6. Expertise and experience in quantitative research design and supervision either alone or alongside mixed method / qualitative research skills

7. Excellent written, oral and interpersonal skills, including evidence of peer reviewed publishing and building collaborations and networks

8. Experience of teaching and/or supervision

9. Strong commitment to diversity and inclusion, and to the principles of the Athena SWAN charter

10. Reflective, self-motivated and team-oriented

 

Desirable criteria

11. Evidence of contributing to the development, publication and dissemination of novel research methods

12. Experience in and knowledge of patient and public involvement in research

13. Promise or track record in securing research funding

14. Teaching qualification and/or experience of curriculum development

15. Experience of mentoring and supervising others

 

Please note that this is a PhD level role but candidates who have submitted their thesis and are awaiting award of their PhDs will be considered. In these circumstances the appointment will be made at Grade 5, spine point 30 with the title of Research Assistant. Upon confirmation of the award of the PhD, the job title will become Research Associate and the salary will increase to Grade 6.
