About the Faculty of Arts - School of Historical and Philosophical Studies

The School of Historical and Philosophical Studies was formed in 2011 comprising the programs of History, History and Philosophy of Science, Philosophy, Classics and Archaeology, and the Grimwade Centre for Cultural Materials Conservation and The Program in Jewish Culture and Society.

The School further explores multi-disciplinary perspectives on ancient Graeco-Roman, Aegean and Near Eastern civilisations including ancient languages. Our Grimwade Centre for Cultural Materials Conservation investigates new areas and innovative practices in instrumentation and analysis, policy and programs in the area of the preservation of cultural materials

About the role

The Faculty welcomes applications to fill the role of Lecturer in Philosophy to complement its strengths and support its teaching and research objectives. The successful applicant will be expected to teach, research, supervise and administer at a level commensurate with a Level B Lecturer. The area of specialization is open. However, the applicant must have demonstrated background and skills in one or more areas of philosophy with a potential to achieve a high level of research performance through the steady production of refereed publications. The successful applicant will also be able to demonstrate significant grant-winning potential in these fields.

About you

You will be expected to make contributions to the teaching effort of the institution and to carry out activities to maintain and develop your scholarly, research, and/or professional activities relevant to the profession or discipline.

You will possess:

  • A PhD or equivalent in Philosophy or related discipline
  • A demonstrated capacity for excellence in teaching, including teaching broad introductory subjects in Philosophy
  • Evidence of substantial and active research and the capacity for publication in high-quality venues
  • An area of specialization that will complement the existing research and teaching strengths of the discipline
  • A capacity to attract research grants
  • A capacity to supervise honours and postgraduate research
  • A capacity to manage administrative tasks associated with the appointee's responsibilities in teaching and research
  • Demonstrated professional and collegial behaviour of a very high standard
