The Ara Sustainability and Outdoor Education programme is seeking to appoint a 0.6 permanent senior lecturer in the fields of sustainability, education, and research methods.

What you will do

The successful candidate will be research active and will be able to facilitate high quality learning experiences in a tertiary context which values applied theory and practice.

In this important role you will do the following:

  • Contribute to teaching in the Master of Sustainable Practice and Bachelor of Sustainability and Outdoor Education programmes. Specifically, you may teach in courses related to sustainable theory and practice and Mātauranga Māori; research methods; and sustainability policy, monitoring, and reporting. Other experience related to sustainability learning is an advantage
  • Undertake supervision of student research and special topic projects at postgraduate level
  • Advance a programme of research which aligns with the strategic goals of Ara and the Postgraduate Sustainable Practice programme

Who you are

The successful candidate will have active research interests related to the broad area of sustainability, along with demonstrated experience in applying sustainability in practice and facilitating high quality learning and teaching in tertiary contexts.

Essential criteria for this role include the following:

  • Research and scholarship in fields relevant to sustainability
  • Relevant teaching experience, with the ability to work in online or blended teaching environments an advantage
  • Experience with student research projects
  • A high level of cross-cultural competency, particularly in tikanga Māori and te Reo
  • Recognition of the importance of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, Mātauranga Māori, and mana whenua values and practices, in advancing a more sustainable, just and equitable Aotearoa New Zealand
  • A research based Masters degree and pathway to a PhD, or a PhD in related fields

Who you will work with

The Sustainability and Outdoor Education Programme (SOEP) consists of a unique suite of qualifications from level 3 to level 9. There are 14 full-time staff and numerous part time staff working across the programmes. The Master of Sustainable practice programme has research active academic staff from across Ara, including Architecture and Engineering, Business, Adult Education, and Health Practice.

The combination of on-line and face to face teaching, coupled with staff deployed across multiple programmes creates a stimulating work environment. The suite of qualifications is future focused, hinged upon a commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and seeks to equip graduates with the skills to both navigate and contribute to our communities and environments in a rapidly changing world.

The SOEP sits within the Department of Humanities alongside other programmes in Te Reo Māori, Teacher Education, International Languages, English Language, and Foundation Studies.
