The University of Helsinki Faculty of Arts (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/faculty-of-arts) is Finland’s oldest and largest unit of teaching and research in the arts in terms of the organisation and selection of its disciplines. The Faculty is also a significant international community of research, education and culture.

The Faculty of Arts, University of Helsinki, invites applications for the position of

UNIVERSITY LECTURER OF ESTONIAN

for a permanent appointment as of 1 January 2022, or as agreed. The field of the position is Estonian.

The university lecturer will be responsible, in particular, for basic- and intermediate-level teaching in Estonian within the Bachelor’s Programme in the Languages and Literatures of Finland and the Master’s Programme in Finnish and Finno-Ugrian Languages together with other teachers. The appointee’s teaching duties will include the provision of teaching to undergraduate (bachelor’s and master’s) students as well as separate specialist courses. The appointee’s primary duties will include teaching basic language skills in Estonian and knowledge about Estonian. The university lecturer must also carry out independent scientific research on Estonian and attend to administrative duties as agreed.

APPOINTMENT CRITERIA

According to the Regulations of the University of Helsinki, the appointee must hold an applicable doctoral degree, have cooperation and planning skills, and be able to provide high-quality teaching based on research and to supervise theses and dissertations.

The appointee must be a native speaker of Estonian, must have completed their education in Estonian or must otherwise have acquired the proficiency of a native speaker of Estonian. The position requires a good knowledge of Estonian linguistics and its current concerns. A wider knowledge of international linguistics is considered an asset. The duties also include planning and development of teaching in Estonian language and culture in cooperation with other staff. According to the Government Decree on Universities, university lecturers are required to be proficient in Finnish. They must also have at least a satisfactory command of spoken and written Swedish. Foreign citizens, non-native Finnish citizens or citizens who have not been educated in Finnish or Swedish may be exempted from this requirement without a separate application.

When assessing the qualifications of applicants, attention will be paid to scientific publications and other research results of academic value, teaching experience, pedagogical training, the ability to produce learning material, other teaching merits and a teaching demonstration.

SALARY

The appointee’s gross monthly salary will range from €3,300 to €4,500, depending on their qualifications and experience. There is a six-month trial period for the position.

Shortlisted applicants will be invited for an interview and a demonstration of teaching skills. The interviews and teaching demonstrations will be conducted via remote video conferencing software.
