Job description
The Department of European & International Studies at King’s College London is seeking to appoint a Professor of European & International Studies who is recognised as a leading scholar in their field of research specialisation and with a strong track-record in intellectual leadership and teaching. The successful candidate will have strong communication skills and a record of impact beyond higher education. We welcome applications from candidates with any theoretical and methodological specialisation related to the study of European politics in a global context broadly understood, including but not limited to the study of politics, institutions and/or policy.

This is a full-time post.

Key responsibilities

  • To provide a major contribution to research, teaching and leadership in EIS, enhancing and extending the reputation of the Department as world-leading.
  • To undertake and publish excellent research in the post-holder’s area of expertise, with an ability to identify new areas for research.
  • To lead on the design and delivery of teaching in EIS, contributing to the development of new research-led modules, the provision of supervision at all levels, programme design and pedagogic innovation.
  • To lead in seeking external funding for research activities and projects, individually or with other scholars at King’s and beyond, with an ability to identify high-quality grant capture opportunities.
  • To be a strategic and innovative leader, providing excellent leadership and administrative skills for the Department and leading in the development of EIS and the School of Politics and Economics.
  • To communicate clearly and persuasively with students, colleagues, and a broad range of external organisations at local, national and international levels.

The above list of responsibilities may not be exhaustive, and the post holder will be required to undertake such tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be expected within the scope and grading of the post.

Skills, knowledge and experience

Essential criteria 

  1. PhD in a relevant subject;
  2. Academic specialism in European politics in a global context broadly understood, included but not limited to the study of politics, institutions and/or policy;
  3. Teaching qualification in higher education and/or significant equivalent teaching experience in higher education;
  4. Ability and willingness to lead, inspire, support and motivate staff;
  5. Track-record in conducting world-leading research in their area of expertise, as demonstrated by their scientific publication record and other relevant markers of impact and esteem;
  6. Track-record of successful grant capture from high-quality funders, including leading major research projects;
  7. Experience of successfully supervising BA, MA and PhD research;
  8. Track record of developing and leading undergraduate and masters’ modules and/or programmes, with the ability to be innovative in teaching and in curriculum design;
  9. Academic administrative experience and skills with the ability and willingness to support and lead the organisational aspects of teaching, learning and research: including organisational management skills;
  10. A good record of engagement, knowledge exchange, and impact beyond higher education. 

Desirable criteria 

  1. Knowledge of or interest in online, blended and distance learning. 
  2. Experience in setting up and/or leading academic networks.
