An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Behavioural Systems Programme at the Medical Research Council Lifecourse Epidemiology Unit (MRC LEU), University of Southampton. The mission of MRC LEU is to promote human health and reduce the burden of cardiometabolic and musculoskeletal health diseases. We apply lifecourse epidemiological methods, and integrate observational evidence and understanding of mechanisms to design intervention studies that we implement and evaluate. Our interdisciplinary research teams include doctors, epidemiologists, statisticians, nutritionists, computer programmers, research fellows and assistants, secretarial, clerical and support staff.

The MRC LEU, University of Southampton, is at the international forefront of developmental origins of disease research. It has an internationally competitive track record in both observational and intervention studies, and well-established links with the University's Institute of Developmental Science, NIHR Biomedical Research Centre and University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust. 

The successful applicant will be responsible for research duties on the WRAPPED study, an intervention study assessing the impact of altered product placement in supermarkets on the purchasing and dietary habits of women customers. The job will involve coordinating and conducting data collection, ensuring accurate completion of all documentation, reports and records, organisation of all data management tasks, liaison with collaborators and supporting members of the study team to fulfil their duties. The position also entails regular travel to rural and urban areas across England, including overnight stays for some trips.  

Although a PhD is not essential, the successful applicant will have demonstrated a strong track record in public health nutrition. The individual will have excellent interpersonal and organisational skills, capabilities to solve problems and think creatively, academic writing experience and the ability to work successfully as part of an interdisciplinary team. The individual must be able to demonstrate an ability to work independently and be able demonstrate a conscientious approach to their professional work.

The appointment is for 6 months. There may be the possibility of extension contingent on a satisfactory performance review and funding availability.

You will be working with a team of researchers based at the Southampton General Hospital and led by Dr Christina Vogel and Professor Janis Baird. Salary is £30,942 per annum per annum.

Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD.   Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
