The Department of Sociology is one of the seven departments housed in the Faculty of Social Sciences, which has a key research niche in smart societies emphasising the research themes of (i) environmental and urban systems; (ii) populations and well-being; and (iii) learning, praxis and governance.  Together with the other six departments including Social Work, Education Studies, Government and International Studies, History, Geography and Sport, Physical Education and Health, the Department of Sociology strives to build interdisciplinary synergy and international partnerships to address social issues of increasing local and international significance.  The research expertise of the Department clusters around four substantive areas: (a) gender, family and life course; (b) social networks and social inequalities; (c) globalisation and social change; and (d) cultures and identities.  One key feature of research in the Department is its convergence on Chinese societies, including Hong Kong, other Chinese societies in East Asia, and especially Mainland China.

The Department invites applications from senior scholars in sociology with a proven track record in research and publications, experience in curriculum development, and strong teaching to serve as the Head of Department, to provide vision and leadership in accomplishing departmental strategic directions. In addition to teaching at undergraduate and/or graduate levels and undertaking research, the successful candidate will be responsible for the strategic and operational management, and elevating the research profile of the Department.
