We are seeking to recruit a Research Fellow in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Southampton to work within a group aiming to understand key determinants of progressive lung fibrosis. Funded by the British Lung Foundation, the research will be led by Dr Mark Jones (Associate Professor of Respiratory Medicine) with Prof Donna Davies (Professor of Respiratory Cell and Molecular Biology) and Dr Ben Marshall (Honorary Associate Professor of Respiratory Medicine).

Working as part of a dynamic translational research team consisting of basic and clinical scientists within the NIHR Southampton Biomedical Research Centre, the successful candidate will be based in the Brooke Laboratory at University Hospital Southampton.

The role will involve human lung tissue and bronchoalveolar lavage analyses, 3D cell culture (including primary cells), analysis of cell responses by molecular and cellular techniques including ELISA, RT-qPCR, and manipulation of cells by pharmacological and gene knock-out/knock-in techniques. There may also be a requirement for some work in collaborators’ laboratories at other University campuses within Southampton.

For this position, you must have a PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in cell/molecular biology. Experience of cell culture and at least some of the techniques listed above is essential, while experience in primary lung cell culture, 3D culture techniques, and (immuno) histochemistry is desirable.

The ideal candidate will be able to adapt to working with a variety of techniques across different laboratories, working efficiently and diligently, with a strong work ethic and able to use their own initiative.  They will be team-oriented, with excellent organisational skills, and reliable. The successful applicant must have excellent spoken and written English communication skills.

This is a full time fixed term role for 05/072022.

Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.
