Job description
The Philosophy Department at King’s College London is seeking an excellent philosopher with outstanding research expertise and teaching experience in one or more of the areas where it currently has pressing teaching needs: Political Philosophy, Epistemology and Logic.
King’s Philosophy Department is one of the largest and most distinguished departments in the UK. We have particular research strengths in the history of philosophy, philosophy of mind and psychology, philosophy of language and logic, metaphysics, epistemology, philosophy of science, and moral and political philosophy. 
This post will be offered on an  a fixed-term contract for 12 months
This is a full-time post.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop, deliver and assess high quality research-led modules in philosophy, as requested by the Head of Department.  
  • Supervise UG and PGT students, and foster their professional development.
  • Show evidence of excellent research capacity in philosophy.
  • Participate in assessment and other educational activities as needed.
  • Act as personal tutor and support students in accordance with Departmental, Faculty and College practice and guidelines.
  • Undertake administrative duties as requested by the Head of Department.
  • Collaborate with other members of the Philosophy department and of the College in all aspects of the job, endeavouring to create an inclusive and supportive environment.

The above list of responsibilities may not be exhaustive, and the post holder will be required to undertake such tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be expected within the scope and grading of the post.  

Skills, knowledge, and experience

Essential criteria

  • PhD in Philosophy (awarded or submitted) at time of appointment 
  • Outstanding teaching ability and suitable teaching experience in the relevant areas of Philosophy. The Department currently has pressing teaching needs specially in Political Philosophy, and also in Epistemology and Logic. 
  • Outstanding ability to supervise Philosophy dissertations at BA and MA level in one or more of those areas. 
  • Excellent record of, or ability and plans for, academic publications and other outputs appropriate to career stage. 
  • Ability to engage in pastoral care, and a concern to create a diverse and inclusive environment in the classroom and in the University.
  • Excellent administrative and organisational skills  

Desirable criteria

  • Administrative experience in an academic environment  
  • Extensive online teaching experience
  • Research and teaching expertise or competence in areas that will help widen or consolidate our curriculum are desirable. These areas include, but are not limited to, non-Western philosophy, logic, and philosophical issues concerning race and gender.
