Job description
Global Health & Social Medicine is a unique interdisciplinary department at King’s College London founded in 2012. Its mission is to address the changing landscape of health and medicine from social science perspectives.
The Department invites applications for a Professor in any area of Global Health & Social Medicine. Candidates should hold a PhD and have an established research profile in a relevant social science field such as sociology, economics, geography, demography, anthropology, public policy, political science, international development, history, social epidemiology or a related relevant discipline or interdisciplinary field.
We seek to appoint a well-established academic with an ambitious forward-looking research agenda in global health and/or social medicine. We would particularly welcome applicants whose research engages with urgent questions of health and social justice, such as environmental justice and health; racial and social inequalities in health; public policy and health governance; sustainable development and global health; life-course and family studies; antiracist, feminist and decolonial global health; economics and demography of health and ageing; and humanitarian biomedicine. We encourage applicants from the full spectrum of empirical methodological expertise, including quantitative social sciences, qualitative methods or mixed methods approaches.
We are seeking applicants with an outstanding track-record of social science research, publications and external funding relative to career stage, and who have the ability to demonstrate a clear leadership trajectory in research and teaching. You will be expected to be well-positioned to lead and collaborate with one or more of the Department’s Research Groups: Bioscience & Society; Culture, Medicine & Power; Mental Health & Society; and Ageing & Society. You should have a track-record of research, publications, and external funding relative to career stage.
You are expected to have an established international standing as demonstrated by important contributions to your subject area through publications, creative work or other appropriate forms of scholarship or performance. You will have a proven ability to initiate and lead major research projects, and a record of attracting significant research grant income. You will be expected to build and lead a research group within the Department.
You will be expected to take a significant leadership role within the Department, be part of the management team and contribute to leadership within the School of Global Affairs. A commitment to collegiality is essential, as is the ability and willingness to engage in constructive dialogue with researchers and practitioners in a variety of contexts, and with policy makers.
You will be expected to make a major contribution to PhD supervision and teaching on the Department’s undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes, and to provide leadership in the development of new MSc or Undergraduate programmes. You will have relevant teaching experience and excellent communication skills. You must have experience in supervising to completion doctoral research students.
Experience or familiarity with the academic environment in the UK is an advantage. You will be responsible to the Head of Department of Global Health & Social Medicine.
At King’s, we are deeply committed to embedding good equality and diversity practice into all of our activities so that the university is an inclusive, welcoming and inspiring place to work and study, regardless of age, disability, gender reassignment, marital status, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion, sex or sexual orientation.
