Teaching Fellow in Language Teaching & Learning and/or Linguistics, English Language, and Systemic Functional Linguistics (Ref. 21070808)

The Department of English and Communication within the Faculty of Humanities at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University has a long history of conducting cutting-edge research in language and communication and educating high-quality graduates for the professional workplace. With a team of 27 full-time academic staff, the Department is actively engaged in research and teaching in the five key areas: (1) Language and Professional Communication (including health communication); (2) Language Teaching and Learning; (3) Linguistics, English Language, and Systemic Functional Linguistics; (4) Media and Communication; and (5) Area Studies and Intercultural Communication. The Department is now inviting applications for the position of Teaching Fellow in Language Teaching & Learning and/or Linguistics, English Language and Systemic Functional Linguistics (in particular Phonetics/Phonology, Grammar, Lexis & Semantics). 

Duties

The appointee will be required to:

(a)    teach English and applied linguistics subjects in the Department’s programmes in the areas of Language Teaching & Learning/Linguistics, English Language and Systemic Functional Linguistics.  The successful candidate should be able to teach some of the following subjects: Analysis of English Pronunciation; Grammar and Meaning; English Lexis and Semantics; Testing and Assessment; Language Development and Use; English as a Global Lingua Franca, Technical and Web-Based Writing, English for Management; and Introduction to English-Speaking Cultures;

(b)    serve as a member on programme teaching teams, and assist in the development / updating of teaching materials;

(c)    play a leadership role in one of the Department’s programmes; and

(d)    participate in and contribute to other academic and administrative activities in the Department as and when required.

Qualifications

Applicants should have:

(a)    at least a master’s degree and professional qualifications in a relevant discipline; a PhD degree in a relevant discipline will be an advantage;

(b)    not less than three years of post-qualification teaching experience at tertiary level;

(c)    an excellent command of spoken and written English; and

(d)    good subject knowledge, skills and competence in English language studies and/or applied linguistics.

Possession of ability to teach one of the Departments’ foreign languages (French, German, Spanish) will be an advantage.

Remuneration and Conditions of Service

A highly competitive remuneration package will be offered.  Initial appointment will be on a fixed-term gratuity-bearing contract.  Re-engagement thereafter is subject to mutual agreement.  Applicants should state their current and expected salary in the application.
