Job Details

As one of Europe’s leading research universities, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) in Munich is committed to the highest international standards of excellence in research and teaching. Building on its more than 500-year-long tradition, it offers a broad spectrum that covers all areas of knowledge within its 18 Faculties, ranging from the humanities, law, economics and social sciences, to medicine and the natural sciences.

The Faculty of History and Arts invites applications for a

Full Professorship (W3) of Theatre Studies (Chair)

commencing on 1 October 2021.

The W3 professorship in Theatre Studies occupies a central position within Theatre Studies at LMU Munich: It represents the subject in its entire range of theatrical genres and performative forms of expression. The importance of LMU Theatre Studies is underscored by a number of important locational advantages: Close cooperation with the Bayerische Theaterakademie August Everding and the department's well-equipped studio stage offer students the opportunity for practical work. There are also numerous collaborations with Munich's diverse and nationally recognised theatre scene.

The candidate is expected to play a key role in shaping the teaching and research of Theatre Studies at LMU Munich through innovative academic perspectives and to set new standards, particularly through international research collaborations and the acquisition of third-party funding. We are therefore looking for an excellent, internationally renowned personality who will represent the subject in its entire breadth in research and teaching, shape the strategic reorientation of the School of Arts Studies and position it for the future. Academic leadership experience would be desirable. In addition to theory-led theatre history research, the profile also includes contemporary perspectives. It would be desirable to also explore alternatives to classical director’s and dramatic theatre, such as forms of puppet and object theatre, European performance art or performances in real-world contexts.

Prerequisites for this position are a university degree, a doctoral degree or a comparable specific qualification, teaching skills at university level, excellent academic achievements and a productive and promising research program.

LMU Munich makes a point of providing newly appointed professors with various types of support, such as welcoming services and assistance for dual career couples.

LMU Munich is an equal opportunity employer. The University continues to be very successful in increasing the number of female faculty members and strongly encourages applications from female candidates. LMU Munich intends to enhance the diversity of its faculty members. Furthermore, disabled candidates with essentially equal qualifications will be given preference.

Applications with the usual documents (curriculum vitae, references, certificates, list of publications, teaching experience and evaluation) should be submitted in electronic form as one PDF file to the Dean of the Faculty of History and Art Sciences, Prof. Dr. Hartmut Schick, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität, Geschwister-Scholl-Platz 1, 80539 Munich by E-Mail to the adress W3TW@lrz.uni-muenchen.de not later than 11 August 2021.
