Job Purpose

We are seeking an experienced and qualified specialist Study Skills Lecturer/Senior Lecturer who will join the Psychology Department to provide high quality study skills support to students, and lead on the teaching and learning delivery processes across the departmental curriculum.

As Lecturer/Senior Lecturer, you will spend a proportion of your time undertaking study skills advisory activities, such as delivering workshops, events and activities and delivering one-to-one student support.  You will develop learning and teaching resources, including video tutorials and written guides. You will also work in collaboration with academic staff to develop and embed students’ study skills within the curriculum to enhance student progression and success.

Appointments at Senior Lecturer level will also be expected to lead on teaching and learning. This will involve overseeing pedagogical aspects of the teaching delivery across the curriculum, carrying out teaching observations, training of teachers in relevant areas and enhancement of quality assurance processes such as marking standardisation.

A Psychology Department Lecturer has the following core areas of responsibility:

  • Teaching on study skills sessions
  • Creating and marking assessment materials
  • Contributing to curriculum development work, such as updating programme materials
  • Providing pastoral support and guidance to students and/or skills development coaching on relevant programmes and modules
  • Ensuring regulatory compliance with BPP systems and processes
  • Contributing to internal and external BPP marketing, business development, outreach and employability activities

Candidate Criteria

Essential

  • PhD in Psychology or Social Sciences, or equivalent
  • A postgraduate teaching qualification
  • Experience in teaching study skills at postgraduate level
  • Experience in module design
  • Experience in module leading
  • Ability to independently design teaching materials, including lectures and seminars
  • Ability to effectively plan, organise and prioritise workload
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent presentation skills
  • Ability to work well in a team and be collaborative
  • Excellent computer/IT skills
  • Self-motivated
  • Student-centric
  • Ownership and accountability
  • Team orientation

Desirable

  • Fellowship of HE Academy at Associate Level or above
  • Experience in delivering online teaching
  • Experience in working with students from different disciplinary backgrounds
  • Ability to provide pastoral support to students
  • Ability to create training materials for teachers

Additional essential criteria for Senior Lecturer

  • Experience in designing, developing, and delivering courses
  • Experience in mentoring or leading staff
  • Experience in developing and implementing assessment procedures, including marking standardisation
  • Experience in developing systems to identify training needs, manage and support employee development
  • Experience in developing training materials for staff

Development Opportunities

The role of a Psychology Lecturer will develop your skills as a professional educator.

You will be given the opportunity to acquire a level 7 teaching qualification, the PGCPHE. You will have regular appraisals with your line manager at which development opportunities will be discussed.
