Job Details

Applications are invited for a** temporary** post of a UCD Postdoctoral Research Fellow Level 1 within UCD School of Biomolecular and Biomedical Science.

An exciting postdoctoral opportunity, at the intersection of cancer epidemiology, biology and genomics, is available in the Cancer Epidemiology team of the Cancer Biology Therapeutics (CBT) lab. Obesity, overweight duration and weight gain in adulthood are each associated to increased cancer risk, particularly obesity-related cancers and colorectal cancer.

While early life exposures appear to impact obesity and related morbidities in adulthood, a concomitant influence on cancer incidence is unclear. One strategy to assess early- versus later-life obesity exposures in cancer aetiology is consideration of genetic predisposition. Within the LifeGene-Obesity project (funded by the IHCC; International HundredK+ Cohorts Consortium), we will assess whether life-course specific genetic markers of obesity influence cancer development in general and specifically colorectal cancer, using data from several large, observational cohort studies.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will use four genomic risk scores (GRS) we have developed for obesity (defined by BMI) in infancy, childhood and adulthood, and overlapping childhood / adulthood in addition to information on dietary / lifestyle questionnaire and circulating biomarkers of inflammation to assess the associated cancer development risk.

This is a research focused role, where you will conduct a specified programme of research supported by research training and development under the supervision and direction of a Principal Investigator. The primary purpose of the role is to further develop your research skills and competences, including the processes of publication in peer-reviewed academic publications, the development of funding proposals, the mentorship of graduate students along with the opportunity to develop your skills in research led teaching. Please include a CV AND Cover Letter when applying for this role.
