Dow Centre for Sustainable Engineering Innovation

The Dow Centre for Sustainable Engineering Innovation was established as a research centre within the School of Chemical Engineering based on a US$10m philanthropic donation from the Dow Chemical Company (“Dow”) in 2012. 

The Dow Centre delivers a comprehensive research portfolio focused on industrial and social sustainability, providing solutions to important engineering related issues facing society in the 21st century. The Dow Centre has core programs around the energy, water and carbon nexus, with the aim of delivering knowledge and leadership for the 21st century within an operational framework that delivers economic prosperity while respecting community values and the environment.

About This Opportunity

The Endowed Dow Chair in Sustainable Engineering Innovation is a pivotal leadership role within UQ's School of Chemical Engineering. Acting as a senior mentor within the School, you will contribute to dynamic learning opportunities within the School's undergraduate and postgraduate programs, working to create an exciting and challenging intellectual environment to attract high quality HDR students. You will also contribute as a Chief Investigator to collaborations that yield new insights and opportunities, including providing leadership in obtaining major competitive funding to support new research streams.

This position will also work with the School Executive to develop strategies to raise the external profile of the School in the areas of focus of the Dow Centre. You will also work with the Dow Centre Board and Management Team to refine and implement the Dow Centre's strategic direction and priorities. This is a rare opportunity to foster a new, future-focused vision for the Centre and mobilise interdisciplinary initiatives in sustainability more broadly. Building external relationships across both industry and government will be key to success in this position, as will leveraging investment opportunities through philanthropy, industry partnerships and competitive research funding.

This position is located at our picturesque St Lucia campus, and will be housed within the brand new Andrew N. Liveris Building.

Our Ideal Candidate

We are searching for a strong academic leader within Chemical Engineering or closely related discipline, with a particular focus on sustainable engineering that compliments or expands upon the Dow Centre's research programs. You will bring significant experience not only in teaching and research. You will be able to demonstrate strong leadership skills in both business and research, including strategy development and implementation, business improvement, and delivery of international quality science and/or engineering research programs. 

Moreover, you will be able to exemplify an ability to create large, collaborative initiatives incorporating multiple disciplines. Finally, you will be able to demonstrate a record of engagement and collaborations with key external stakeholders (industry, government, etc.), a track record of winning major competitive external research funding, and a history of obtaining investment funding from other sources.
