About the position 

Department of Marine Technology has a vacancy for a Postdoctoral Fellow at the SFI MOVE centre. The MOVE centre is financially supported by Research Council of Norway with industrial participation. It is led by the Department of Ocean Operations and Civil Engineering (IHB), NTNU, with focus to support the entire marine operations value chain by developing knowledge, methods and computer tools for safe and efficient analysis of both the equipment and the installation process. It covers the application areas of marine operations related to the offshore oil & gas, offshore wind and sea mining industries. The developed methods shall be implemented in simulator environments to enable training of individual human actions as well as the team performance.

This Postdoctoral Fellowship position is a temporary position where the main goal is to qualify for work in senior academic positions.

The research topic of this position is about real-time short-term wave-induced load and motion forecasting of an offshore service vessel or a lifting DP vessel, with feed-forward mechanism for motion compensation control. More specifically, it is to develop a real-time estimator and predictor of wave conditions, vessel loads and motion responses for use in feedforward motion compensation control for marine operations. Possible vessel types to implementation can be Offshore Service Vessels (OSVs) with gangway access for crew and equipment transfer for offshore wind turbine maintenance or heavy lift vessels for installing offshore wind turbine blades or subsea structures with motion compensation systems.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will report to the supervisors Professor Zhen Gao, Professor Roger Skjetne at IMT and Associate Professor Karl Henning Halse at IHB.

Duties of the position

  • Perform fundamental research on the above-mentioned topics
  • Report progress on a regular basis and in agreement with the supervisors
  • Contribute to the dissemination of the research outcome in terms of scientific reports and papers
  • The Candidate must engage in the SFI MOVE activities as required, including being in contact with possible industry partners for this research topic

Required selection criteria

  • The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant
  • You must have completed a Norwegian doctoral degree or corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognized as equivalent to a Norwegian PhD
  • You must have a professionally relevant background in marine technology/ocean engineering, and marine control
  • Excellent English skills, spoken and written. Applicants from non-English-speaking countries outside Europe must document English skills by an approved test. Approved tests are TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE)

Preferred selection criteria

  • Research and/or engineering experience from related marine operations and/or marine applications is an advantage.

Salary and conditions

As a Postdoctoral Fellow (code 1352) you are normally paid from gross NOK 553 500 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is 2 years.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution on a daily basis.
