JOB PURPOSE:

To give effect to a strategy to recruit and retain outstanding potential undergraduate students in cooperation with the Senior Assistant Director: Recruitment. The post primarily focuses on recruiting and supplying information to undergraduate students. Recruiting students with the desired student profile (academically achieving, sport, culture, representative groups) nationally, and in SADC countries by means of focused strategies and in cooperation with faculties and support departments on campus as well as external partners. Retention of students. This responsibility manifests itself as an advisory and reference service and is a continuation of the relationship that was built up with the student when he/she was recruited.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful candidate's responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Student recruitment and the dissemination of information;
  • Liaising with schools and school communities in the University’s target market with the purpose of identifying and advising suitable prospective students through marketing, dissemination of information, recruitment talks to Grade 9 to 12 learners, attending career days and evenings at schools, career exhibitions and conducting interviews with learners and their parents;
  • Advising prospective students on their choice of courses based on academic performance and career choice;
  • Being involved with and organising initiatives to recruit quality students for UP;
  • Planning and providing monthly activity reports on progress, problems and market trends, finances and expenditure.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • A degree in any one of the following fields: Education, Psychology (Counselling or Educational Psychologist), Marketing OR Communication;
  • Six years’ relevant working experience;
  • Two years’ experience in communicating with learners/students;
  • One year experience in project management;

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

  • Multilingualism (English with at least one other South African language);
  • Organisational capabilities;
  • Knowledge of a tertiary education environment;
  • Ability to attend to multiple tasks and meet deadlines;
  • Accuracy and a sense of responsibility;
  • Skilled in the use of MS Office computer packages;
  • Sound interpersonal and conflict managing skills;
  • Self-motivated and client orientated;
  • Presentation and communication skills in English and Afrikaans.
  • A valid driver’s licence.

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

  • A postgraduate qualification in at least one of the aforementioned fields of study;
  • Experience in relationship or marketing management;
  • Preference will be given to candidates with experience of student recruitment in a tertiary environment and/or experience as a career counsellor at a high school;
  • Must be able to work independently and to participate effectively within a team;
  • Willingness to be out of town for long periods of time (a week or two per month).

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
