Monash is a university of transformation, progress and optimism. Our people are our most valued asset, with our academics among the best in the world. Monash University was founded on the belief that the search for knowledge and the ways to use it never end. Discover more at www.monash.edu.

The Monash Law Faculty (Monash Law) was established more than half a century ago to be a different kind of law school, with a pioneering spirit, an enterprising and inclusive approach, and a deep commitment to access to justice in all of its forms.

At Monash Law, we work with the legal profession and industry partners to develop a new generation of law graduates whose curiosity, commitment, and leadership will make a difference to our world. We offer a broadly based legal educational experience, for the benefit of students and their potential employers within and beyond the legal profession. We provide world-class facilities for world-class students and academics, such as our renowned clinical sites, state-of-the-art moot court, and contemporary student-centred learning environments.

Monash Law is consistently recognised and ranked as one of the world’s best law schools. Monash Law is a leading international, clinical, and digital law school in the Indo-Pacific region, providing world-class education, research, and external engagement across both global hemispheres. For more information about the Faculty of Law, please visit our website: www.monash.edu/law.

The Opportunities

Monash Law is the only Australian law school to operate from seven different locations on three continents, and with significant investment in three community legal centres. Our commitment to local communities and the legal profession is as deep as our commitment to preparing our students and supporting our academics to make a difference in the world. Our dedicated Monash University Law Chambers situated in the Melbourne CBD legal district complements our main Clayton campus base, our offshore Monash campus operations (eg Prato and Malaysia), and our multiple sites of operation for legal clinics.

The Faculty has a vibrant research culture, with a strong commitment to diverse and innovative forms of high-quality and cross-disciplinary legal research that has governmental, professional, and social impact. We collaborate with world leaders in legal research and education throughout Australia and internationally and have demonstrated top-tier research performance. Our staff are involved in ARC Discovery and Linkage grants and fellowships, as well as CRC projects, networks of excellence, and multiple cross-disciplinary and industry-based collaborations. The Faculty also has three outstanding University-approved research centres - the Castan Centre for Human Rights Law, the Australian Centre for Justice Innovation, and the Centre for Commercial Law and Regulatory Studies - and a number of vibrant and emerging research groups, including Feminist Legal Studies, Transnational Criminal Law, and Health and Wellbeing, as well as the new Capital Punishment Impact Initiative (Eleos Justice), Commercial Dispute Resolution Group, and Public Sector Law and Governance Group.

The Faculty of Law is looking to appoint a number of outstanding academics to a number of ongoing academic leadership roles.

Deputy Dean

The Deputy Dean is a senior leader within the Faculty and, as an Executive Committee member, will have the responsibility for making a major contribution toward leading the Faculty and its academic staff, including carriage of steering large-scale Faculty, cross-faculty, and whole-of-University initiatives for Monash Law.

This newly created position has responsibility for the overall operational management of the academic staff cohort, and will provide strategic leadership in academic governance and supervision, staffing and resource planning, and implementation of strategy to achieve the Faculty’s vision. Staffing parameters include the recruitment and appointment of both ongoing academic staff and sessional and adjunct staff, creating a leadership culture, and building leadership and supervisory capability at each academic level.

Given the matrix nature of the organisational system that operates at Monash, the incumbent can expect to work closely with a number of University directors and leaders, with and through the Executive Dean. As the only Deputy Dean in the Faculty and the senior academic leader alongside the Executive Dean, the appointee can expect to undertake the role of Acting Dean at regular intervals in each academic year.

The Deputy Dean plays a key role in building an environment of strong staff engagement and creating a high-performance management culture and implementing defined mechanisms for aligned, best practice performance management across the Faculty at all levels.

The position of Deputy Dean will be held initially for three (3) years, and may be extended for an additional term by mutual agreement. The Deputy Dean position will be underpinned by a continuing appointment as Professor.

Professor & Chair (Sir Owen Dixon Chair)

The eminent Sir Owen Dixon Chair in Public Law will be a leader in both research and teaching in public law. They will develop and lead the public law discipline, make a broad contribution across the Faculty, and play a significant role within the profession and discipline. The role will encompass leading and mentoring of staff and early career researchers and supervising postgraduate students.

The Chair, and the Faculty’s national and international reputation in public law, will increasingly attract the finest staff and high calibre students, particularly PhD candidates. Above all, the Chair will further develop the Faculty’s reputation as an international leader in public law teaching and practice, and provide leadership for Monash Law’s emerging Public Sector Law and Governance Group. The role sits in the Faculty of Law, and will have a close relationship with cognate disciplines and academics in the Faculty of Law, Faculty of Arts, and the Business School, which together lead the University’s research excellence and impact in one of Monash’s four designated areas of cross-disciplinary research expertise – Better Governance and Policy.

The position of Sir Owen Dixon Chair in Public Law will be held initially for five (5) years, and may be extended after a review for an additional 5 years at the discretion of the University. The named chair position will be underpinned by a continuing appointment as Professor.

Professor/Associate Professor Law, Technology, & Artificial Intelligence (AI)

The Professor/Associate Professor of Law, Technology, & Artificial Intelligence (AI) is responsible for providing expertise in a broad range of specialist areas that study and contribute to the impact of existing and future technologies on society, including the use of AI. The position therefore has a core focus upon the intersections between AI, technology, and law, with a strong regulatory focus, building upon Monash Law’s established reputation and leadership in public law, corporate law, regulatory studies, human rights, and criminal investigation and enforcement.

The Professor/Associate Professor of Law, Technology, & AI will engage with the ethical, legal, and policy frameworks that the legal services industry, regulatory investigators, and the broader administration of justice and regulation are developing and using, including LawTech, RegTech, and FinTech, to address the needs of legal clients and society at large.

The Professor/Associate Professor of Law, Technology, & AI will be a leader in both research and teaching in this field. They will develop and lead the relevant fields and academics in this discipline, make a broad contribution across the Faculty and University, and play a significant role within the profession and related industry sectors. The role will encompass leading and mentoring of staff and early career researchers and supervise postgraduate students, as well as leading the Faculty’s emerging group of legal academics with capability in AI, technology, and regulation.

The role sits in the Faculty of Law, and will have a close relationship with the Faculty of Information Technology, the Faculty of Science, and the Faculty of Engineering, as the lead faculties involved in one of Monash’s four designated areas of cross-disciplinary research expertise – AI and Data Futures, and associated research institutes with legal and investigatory stakeholders, such as the Artificial Intelligence for Law Enforcement and Community Safety (AiLECS) Lab in partnership with the Australian Federal Police. The Professor of Law, Technology, & AI will have a key focus on issues arising from the relationship between AI, technology, and law, including emerging legal issues as AI and technology evolve, how these issues are addressed in Australia and other jurisdictions, and the treatment of AI and technology as objects of regulation in the digital age and fourth industrial revolution.
