The Department of Biochemistry at the Faculty of Science MU deals with basic and applied research on metabolism of microorganisms, mammals, plants and the development of (bio)analytical methods. Job Description

Masaryk University in Brno, the Czech Republic, is offering a two-year postdoctoral fellowship to a recent PhD graduate who has experience and/or is willing to engage in research on the development of advanced biosensors and immunoassays, with focus on optical, piezoelectric, and electrochemical transducers. The successful candidate will undertake research in the laboratories of Dr. Zdeněk Farka in the Faculty of Science and candidate will collaborate with other research laboratories in the Faculty and CEITEC MU (Petr Skládal research group). Current projects focus on the development of novel biosensing strategies, focusing on implementation of nanomaterials to improve the performance of optical, piezoelectric, and electrochemical readout. Laboratories are also focused on advanced surface modification, characterization of nanomaterials, and study of bacterial lysis. Available facilities include a systems for surface plasmon resonance, quartz crystal microbalance, electrochemical sensing, atomic force microscopy, transmission and scanning electron microscopy, fluorescence microscopy, dynamic light scattering, nanoparticle tracking analysis, and advanced microplate readers for luminescence readout. Dr. Farka has international collaborations with scientists in Germany, Finland, France, and Sweden, and maintains strong links with biotechnology industry (Lumito AB, TestLine). The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic individual with an excellent PhD or early postdoctoral publication record and must be prepared to work both independently and in collaboration with other members of the research team.

Skills and Qualifications

The applicant must:

  • be a researcher who has received a PhD or its equivalent within the last 7 years
  • be a researcher who has worked at least two whole years in the last three outside the territory of the Czech Republic in the field of scientific research either full time or not less than 0.5 full-time equivalent, or who has been a PhD student (or equivalent) abroad
  • have a publishing record comprising, within the last three years, at least two refereed research papers listed in the Thomson Reuters Web of Science, Scopus or ERIH PLUS databases. Publications such as “articles”, “books”, “book chapters”, “letters” and “reviews” may be considered if they were refereed and listed in the above databases.

The selection committee may consider additional specific criteria, particularly:

  • The Ph.D. degree in natural sciences
  • experience with development of biosensors based on optical, piezoelectric, and/or electrochemical transducers
  • experience with characterization of surface and nanomaterials using atomic force and/or electron microscopy techniques
  • experience with surface modification techniques
  • good communication skills
  • demonstrated ability to work both independently and in collaboration with members of a research team
  • strong publication activity, with at least 15 publications (type article o review) and h-index higher than 5 according to Thomson Reuters Web of Science.
