Role Description
Cranfield University’s world-class expertise, large-scale facilities and unrivalled industry partnerships is creating leaders in technology and management globally. Learn more about Cranfield and our unique impact here.
We have an exciting opportunity for a new apprentice to work with us at Cranfield Defence and Security.
Development and maintenance of first-class teaching and industrial-scale research facilities are key to delivering the University strategy, alongside the need for strong and flexible technical support which enables academic staff and researchers to deliver contracts to quality, time and cost, and to deliver teaching informed by our research. The facilities are distinct and add significantly to our uniqueness.
About the Role
Skilled technicians are crucial to our success. We are therefore seeking to attract highly motivated individuals who are keen to develop into skilled technicians through a formal apprenticeship. You will have the ability and desire to work as part of a team to provide a premier technical provision to the school’s stakeholders, working in partnership with technical colleagues of all levels to ensure effective operation of facilities as a whole.
This position has a significant training requirement. The role requires an open mind for future development in all areas. It is anticipated that this role will support a variety of work in different environments. By the end of your apprenticeship you should have developed sufficient skills to join a professional body and become a registered Technician, making a valued and significant contribution to the University.
About You
You will have achieved up to 5 GCSE’s Grade A-C or 9-4 including Maths, English and Science (or equivalent level qualifications or relevant experience). You must be prepared to engage in a programme of study which leads to an approved apprenticeship qualification.
You will be IT literate with a good level of grammar, spelling, accuracy, and attention to detail. You will be able to plan and organise to meet deadlines and willing to follow instructions and learn new skills.
In return, the successful applicant will have exciting opportunities for career development in this key position, and to support world leading research and education, joining a supportive team and environment.
At Cranfield, we value Diversity and Inclusion, and aim to create and maintain a culture in which everyone can work and study together harmoniously with dignity and respect and realise their full potential. We actively consider flexible working options such as part-time, compressed or flexible hours and/or an element of homeworking, and commit to exploring the possibilities for each role.
As part of our commitment to support and develop Technical staff across the University, we have now also become a founding signatory of the Science Council's Technician Commitment. This is a sector wide, collaborative initiative led by the Science Council and supported by the 'Technicians Make It Happen' campaign, to ensure visibility, recognition, career development and sustainability for technicians working in higher education and research.
Our Values
Our shared, stated values help to define who we are and underpin everything we do: Ambition; Impact; Respect; and Community. Find out more here. We aim to create and maintain a culture in which everyone can work and study together and realise their full potential.
Diversity and Inclusion
