Job Details

Northumbria University seeks to appoint a one-year fixed-term lecturer in Theatre and Performance. The successful candidate should hold a PhD (or equivalent) in any area of Theatre or Performance Studies (or a cognate discipline) and will have an emerging research profile with an appropriate track-record of relevant research outputs and/or professional practice. Experience in teaching at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels, and evidence of administrative skills in higher education are essential requirements. Some engagement with curriculum design and/or module management would be advantageous.

Theatre and Performance at NU is multifaceted, interdisciplinary and concerned to address ‘real world’ questions and challenges as made manifest in performances, and understood as or through performance. Committed to excellence in all aspects of research and teaching, the successful candidate will contribute to undergraduate and/or postgraduate teaching in Theatre and Performance as appropriate to their research specialisms, skills and experiences. We are particularly interested to hear from candidates equally at home teaching in studio contexts and lecture-seminar environments. Whatever your areas of specialism, you will be committed to research-rich approaches to learning and teaching, as well as to ensuring the best possible student experience.

Based in our city centre campus in Newcastle upon Tyne, we boast a range of high-quality studios and theatres. We are embedded within a range of professional artistic, cultural and community organisations where we produce professional and student led events, festivals and performances. These include; GIFT (Gateshead International Festival of Theatre), Live Theatre, Northern Stage, Dance City, Helix Arts and Mind the Gap.

Our research traverses practice research and more ‘traditional’ forms of scholarship, explores philosophical and critical approaches to performance to address questions of identity, social-justice, climate crisis, political underrepresentation, power, and performance futures. With this in mind, we invite exceptional candidates working in any area of theatre and performance but specifically welcome applications in: contemporary performance practices; community/communities and performance; interdisciplinary approaches to performance; urban living and performance.
