Research Assistant or Research Fellow in Software Development for Battery Management Algorithms

Cranfield University’s Advanced Vehicle Engineering Centre welcomes applications from researchers to develop and integrate battery management software to accelerate the impact of two major research projects on next-generation batteries.

About Transport Systems

Transport Systems is one of the eight themes at Cranfield University.  In an increasingly interconnected world, our award-winning research and teaching is helping to define the future of global transport. We specialise in understanding the whole environment in which transport operates: the vehicles, infrastructure, businesses and logistics as well as the human aspects of operating, managing and using transport.

About the Role

As part of its portfolio of research, Cranfield is participating in two projects relating to Lithium-Sulfur batteries: LiS:FAB (funded by Innovate UK) and LISA (funded by the European Commission).  These projects are developing novel models and state estimation algorithms for the management of this new battery technology.

The aim of the post is to identify potential ‘problem areas’ that users of our algorithms might encounter in practice, to develop model-based software tests to capture these, to help design suitable mitigations, and to generally support researchers transitioning algorithms to Simulink.

About You

Applicants will be expected to hold a relevant MEng/MSc degree or to have equivalent experience, to have prior experience writing software in a research/industrial environment, prior experience of interfacing software with the physical world, and skills in numerical computing, MATLAB and Simulink.  The applicant will need to demonstrate good speaking and listening skills, good presentation skills, good time management and the ability to work independently.  To be appointed at research fellow grade, the applicant will be expected to hold (or be close to completion of) a relevant PhD or to have equivalent experience and will also need to demonstrate significant prior experience developing software in a relevant research/industrial environment.
