Bayesian Agent-Based Population Studies

This is an exciting opportunity to join a cutting-edge project “Bayesian Agent-based Population Studies: Transforming Simulation Models of Human Migration”, funded by the European Research Council (https://www.southampton.ac.uk/baps).

The aim of the project is to develop a ground-breaking simulation model of international migration, based on a population of intelligent, cognitive agents, their social networks and institutions, all interacting with one another. In the modelling process, we are using Bayesian statistical principles to design innovative computer simulations, and to learn about the way the simulated individuals make decisions through cognitive experiments.

You will have, or be working towards, a PhD (or equivalent professional qualifications) in experimental psychology. Experience in conducting laboratory-based experiments, collating experimental data and conducting statistical tests on those data; the ability to plan and organise work independently and as part of a team; and understanding and knowledge of Bayesian statistics, are also essential attributes. Knowledge or experience with simulation modelling of human behaviour, will be additional advantages.

This research position will be based in the Centre for Vision and Cognition, within the School of Psychology, Faculty of Environmental and Life Sciences, at the University of Southampton.  You will work closely with the project team: Prof. Jakub Bijak (project lead, Social Sciences) and Dr Philip Higham (Psychology), on the tasks directly relevant to the experimental work, and with other members of the project team.

Applications will be considered from candidates who are working towards a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Senior Research Assistant will be given prior to the qualification being awarded.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon completion of PhD.

Informal enquiries may be addressed to Prof. Jakub Bijak, email: J.Bijak@southampton.ac.uk.

Interviews will take place in late May 2021.

The position is expected to start on 1 June 2021, and will finish by 30 November 2021.

Application Procedure

You should submit your completed online application form at https://jobs.soton.ac.uk. The application deadline will be midnight on the closing date stated above.
