As a member of the Faculty Graduate School, the Southampton Business School’s postgraduate research students are a highly valued part of our community, and are integral to the continued success of the Business School and of the University as a whole. Our PhD programme has been awarded +3 recognition for full-time students by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and has also received research studentships from ESRC and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) for its doctoral programme. We offer a stimulating, challenging and dynamic research environment for our PhD students. 

 HRM & OB at Southampton Business School is a multidisciplinary department comprising economists, sociologists and management and organization scholars that together offer leading edge research in the fields of business ethics, corporate social responsibility, sustainable behaviour/practice,  employee relations, workforce diversity & inequalities, gig work, careers, technologies and workplace innovation, work and well-being, new global economies, work/non-work interface, new ways of working, labour market and workplace institutions, social and solidarity economy and alternative forms of organising. 

As part of the University of Southampton – a top 100 university (QS & U.S. News world rankings) and a founding member of the Russell Group – the Centre for Research in Work and Organizations (CRWO) enjoys a global reputation for academic excellence in research and teaching. HRM & OB members conduct world-class research and publish regularly in leading academic outlets, such as Organization Studies, Human Relations, Gender, Work & Organization, British Journal of Management, International Journal of Management Reviews, Journal of Business Research, Journal of Business Ethics, Journal of Management Inquiry and Work, Employment and Society. 

For this scholarship, we welcome PhD project proposals from candidates with an interest in HRM/OB and Organizations Studies. The successful candidate is free to study the topic of his/her interest. However, we particularly welcome proposals from candidates with an interest in: 

  • The Future of Work (New ways of work, gig economy, employment relationship, leadership, labour market institutions and the comparative outcomes of people, organizations and/or countries, work-life balance & wellbeing, digital transformation, work-non-work interface, gender in organizations, careers, diversity, inclusion and inequalities at work & organisations).
  • Ethics, CSR and Responsible Organising (Democratizing work organizations, co-operative forms of work, inequalities, social economy & social change, ethical leadership, sustainable HRM, political CSR, degrowth, sustainable organizing, grand challenges & social sustainability). 

The Department has a very active PhD programme, and your research study will be supervised by leading international scholars.

The scholarships consist of full tuition fees and annual stipend of £15,009 (£1,250.75 per month) for 3 years, which are open to both UK/EU and international/overseas students. Ideal candidates will possess bachelor’s degree with first class and master’s degree with distinction or equivalent in any of our broad disciplines of business and management. Candidates will also need to meet our standard admission requirements for PhD students in addition to a strong research proposal.
