About the position

The Department of International Business has a vacancy for a PhD candidate in Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment for decision making in low trophic level fisheries capture. The position will be undertaken at NTNU in Ålesund and is part of the multi-partner SFI Harvest Project – Technologies for sustainable biomarine value creation. We are looking for candidates with a background or experience within at least one of the following areas: Environmental Sciences, Industrial Ecology, Environmental Sustainability.

Monitoring and evaluating the sustainability of new value chains within the marine environment is important to give decision makers the tools to make equitable choices, which balance environmental, social and economic interests and reduce adverse effects from the adoption of new technologies in the pursual of low trophic level species. In order to build an affective sustainability impact assessment tool, knowledge and expertise from SFI Harvest partners will be drawn on to understand the likely impacts related to this new biomarine value chain. Similarly, a decision-support tool will be developed in collaboration with SFI Harvest partners in order to ensure that it is fit for purpose and meaningful to relevant stakeholders.

The goal of the project is to develop a sustainability impact assessment tool and decision-support tool to allow effective decision making around new technologies and developments associated with low trophic level fisheries capture.

About the SFI Harvest

SFI Harvest brings together pioneering shipowners, key technology providers, large producers of raw materials and feed for the aquaculture sector, stakeholders, SINTEF Ocean and other strong research groups, including AMOS (the Norwegian Centre of Excellence for Autonomous Marine Operations and Systems). The innovations will enable precise and efficient capture and processing of mesopelagic species, zooplankton and phytoplankton.

Duties of the position

To build a prospective and comprehensive sustainability assessment tool for lower trophic level fisheries capture business models, providing decision-support to projects and industrial partners throughout the R&D process.

The PhD candidate is expected to contribute to review, design, analysis and testing of the sustainability assessment tool in cooperation with project partners. The main purpose of the PhD is to provide a sustainability assessment tool which can be used in decision making.

Research activities will revolve around:

  • Reviewing fisheries capture business models and value chains which correspond to sustainable governance and management.
  • Working with partners to assess the applicability of existing sustainability assessment tools.
  • Building a sustainability assessment tool for lower trophic level fisheries business models.
  • Validation and calibration of the resultant tool in collaboration with SFI Harvest partners.
  • Developing a decision-making framework to support the sustainability assessment tool.
  • Testing the decision-making framework with key stakeholders from SFI Harvest.
  • Dissemination of results through peer-reviewed journals and conferences.

Other activities

  • Participation in activities organized by SFI Harvest Partners.
  • Working closely with researchers across project work packages.

Required selection criteria

The PhD-position's main objective is to qualify for work in research positions. The qualification requirement is that you have completed a master’s degree or second degree (equivalent to 120 credits) with a strong academic background in Environmental Studies or equivalent education with a grade of B or better in terms of NTNU’s grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic foundation. If you are unable to meet these criteria you may be considered only if you can document that you are particularly suitable for education leading to a PhD degree.

The position requires excellent English oral and writing skills. The following tests can be used as such documentation: TOEFL, IELTS or Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE). Minimum scores are:

  • TOEFL: 600 (paper-based test), 92 (Internet-based test)
  • IELTS: 6.5, with no section lower than 5.5 (only Academic IELTS test accepted)
  • CAE/CPE: grade B or A

Knowledge of Norwegian or other Scandinavian language will contribute positively to the evaluation of the applicant.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant.

Have experience of interviewing, focus groups and running stakeholder workshops.

We offer

Salary and conditions

PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 482 200 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is 3 years without required teaching duties.

The position is connected to the PhD programme at the Faculty of Economics and Management and the faculty will be your employer. Appointment to a PhD position requires admission to the PhD programme in Economics and Management. As a PhD candidate, you undertake to participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period. A condition of appointment is that you are in fact qualified for admission to the PhD programme within three months. 

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution daily.
