Professor/Assistant /Associate Professor, Atmospheric Sciences

Faculty of Science is founded on basic scientific research applied and complemented by the disciplines of geography and geology. Thanks to our solid research infrastructure and internationally distinguished researchers, our research is of a high standard. Among the Faculty’s strengths are also our wide-ranging study opportunities. We offer 8 bachelor’s programmes, 13 master’s programmes and 7 doctoral programmes. At the moment, we have 4,895 students.

The Institute for Atmospheric and Earth System Research (INAR) is a multi- and interdisciplinary research unit based in physics, chemistry, meteorology, forest sciences, environmental sciences and social sciences at the University of Helsinki. INAR aims to strengthen the internationally leading, integrated multidisciplinary research and education environment for atmospheric and Earth system science, and to provide scientific results for national and international environmental and climate policy. It performs multiscale research from molecular to global scales, and focuses on climate change, air quality, biogeochemical cycles and ecosystem processes. INAR has INAR Finland Network partners at the Finnish Meteorological Institute, University of Eastern Finland and Tampere University.

The Faculty of Science invites applications for the position of
PROFESSOR OR ASSISTANT/ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR IN ATMOSPHERIC SCIENCES
The research area of the post is air quality and teaching areas air quality, physics and chemistry of air pollution.

A large fraction of the human population lives in regions that do not meet recommended WHO standards for air quality. Strategies for limiting exposure and implementing pollution abatement policies require science-based understanding of sources and atmospheric mechanisms that control air quality and species most deleterious to human health. New recruitment is expected to form a research group that extends research capabilities of current professors at INAR, addressing current gaps in measurement techniques and/or modelling of air quality and related health effects. This can include development, calibration and deployment of innovative sensors and information systems and/or development of data analysis and/or modelling tools to better monitor citizens’ exposure to air pollution and address exposure related risks. The outcomes of the research should support decision-making by air quality managers and regulators as well as foster connections to other stakeholders such as the business sector.
