Job description 
Research in the newly established Department of Surgical & Interventional Engineering delivers pathologically, anatomically and physiologically optimal surgeries by combining diagnostic-quality imaging and sensing with ergonomic smart instruments. Areas of focus include medical ultrasound, flexible robotic systems with advanced haptic perception and interaction capabilities, surgical planning and optical imaging techniques for automated tissue recognition.

The department aims to bring together engineering expertise with clinical experts to develop new technologies and methodology for a wide range of clinical applications, with a focus on combining diagnostic information to support image-guidance during procedures. The core experimental facility for our Department is ~600m² of state-of-the-art, multi-disciplinary, fully equipped multi-user laboratory space. Key component of the created facilities is a technology validation suite kitted for cadaver studies, alongside state-of-the-art interventional imaging and surgical robotics equipment.

This new Department is;
(1) to be at the forefront of an emerging theme of Artificial Intelligence (AI), termed Surgical Data Science or Surgical AI, and
(2) to deliver outstanding education on Deep Learning for Surgery & Intervention.

We are looking for a strong, internationally leading, Surgical AI expert to achieve our mission and retain our competitiveness in the global Surgical & Interventional Engineering landscape.

Hours: Full-time 35 hours per week
Contract: Indefinite


Key Responsibilities 

Research 

  • To provide research leadership within the research field of the appointee; that is, Surgical Data Science or Surgical AI
  • To undertake internationally leading research and submit research for publication, to contribute to the School's research record and the further advancement of the discipline/profession
  • To raise funding through peer reviewed grant applications to support a substantial programme of research.
  • To develop and strengthen links with others in the appointee's area of expertise and with complimentary expertise within the School and with external bodies to promote the research and to assist in funding it.
  • Writing papers for peer reviewed journals and presenting results at national and international meetings
  • Supervising individual staff working on grants on which you are PI or CI, and postgraduate students assigned to you

Teaching

  • Teaching to undergraduates and postgraduate students in the form of lectures, tutorials, workshops and lab classes, and ensuring that colleagues perform their assigned functions in such teaching for which you are responsible
  • Directing, designing, planning and delivering courses and modules, including lectures and training activities for undergraduates and MSc students
  • Assisting in the assessment process of undergraduates and postgraduate taught and research students, including attendance at Examiners' meetings
  • To assume a leadership role (e.g. Programme Director, Assessment Sub-Board Chair etc.) in managements of one or more programmes, and in new programme development and curriculum development
  • Acting as personal tutor so a small number of undergraduate and taught postgraduate students who may be assigned to the post holder
  • Serving on Thesis Progression Committees as required by the Head of Department and Head of School 

Other Duties 

  • To carry out any administrative duties assigned by the Head of School and Head of Dept.
  • To represent the Dept/School on School, College and University Committees as required
  • Maintaining a flow of information about results and progress to the relevant Heads of Department to assist with research strategy planning.

Skills, knowledge, and experience 

Essential criteria - Senior Lecturer 

  • First degree in relevant field
  • PhD in relevant field
  • Track record of independent research in one or more aspects in Surgical Data Science or Surgical AI 
  • Established network of collaborations in interdisciplinary research 
  • Excellent written and oral communication 
  • Excellent analytical skills
  • Grant writing and track record of successful research funding commensurate with opportunity/career stage 
  • Writing and publishing papers 
  • Supervising junior researchers
  • Teaching and lecturing at undergraduate/postgraduate level 
  • Undertaking collaborative research at both a local and international level, including collaboration with a view to commercialisation/translation of research 
  • Professional and ambitious
  • Team player with commitment to both lead and assist in research projects as appropriate and support of junior academics 
  • Positive approach to teaching, research and to training and encouraging students 
  • Discretion when dealing with personal issues involving subordinates especially students 

Desirable criteria - Senior Lecturer

  • Membership of a professional body
  • Postgraduate teaching qualification in higher education
  • Leadership of undergraduate/postgraduate teaching - programme or module level
