Digital Intimacies is an interdisciplinary project that brings together media and cultural studies and public health perspectives to understand how gay and bisexual men use their smartphones to negotiate their cultures of intimacy. Hosted at King’s College, London with a co-Investigator based at Edinburgh University, the project also has partnerships with sexual health organisations Terrence Higgins Trust, London Friend and Waverley Care. 

The research assistant role will be to provide administrative and technical support for the final phase of Digital Intimacies. These administrative and technical duties include the production of the end of project podcast, maintaining the project website and social media accounts, coordinate the publication of the end of project community report and lead on the organisation of the end of project symposium.

The candidate should have at least graduate level qualifications in media and cultural studies, sociology or public health in  the areas of digital media, gender and sexuality studies. Some skills in the production of podcasts and/or organising digital symposia would be an advantage.

This contract will be offered on a part time 85% FTE, fixed term contract for 6 months.

Key responsibilities 

  • Provide administrative support for the last phase of the Digital Intimacies project 
  • Contribute to and support the production of research reports and publications 
  • Liaise with research colleagues and support staff on routine matters
  • Actively participate as a member of a research team
  • Attend and contribute to relevant meetings
  • Deal with problems which may affect of research objectives and deadlines.
  • Deal with routine communication using a range of media
  • Communicate complex information, orally, in writing and electronically
  • Produce the project podcast
  • Contribute to and support the organisation of the end of project symposium
  • Maintaining the project website and social media accounts

The above list of responsibilities may not be exhaustive, and the post holder will be required to undertake such tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be expected within the scope and grading of the post.

Skills, knowledge, and experience

Essential criteria 

  1. Graduate level qualifications in media and cultural studies, sociology or public health with subject knowledge of digital media, gender and sexuality studies and/or some research experience
  2. Demonstrable communication skills in English language
  3. Good IT skills in Microsoft/Adobe programmes
  4. Excellent report writing and presentation skills
  5. Good time management and organizational skills
  6. Good Interpersonal skills
  7. Well developed analytical and practical skills in digital media, gender and sexuality studies.
  8. Podcast production skills and experience
  9. Website and social media maintenance

Desirable criteria 

  1. A relevant postgraduate research degree/equivalent professional qualification/experience or be working towards one.
  2. Experience working with the sexual health sector.
  3. Experience of organising academic conferences/similar events
