Assistant Professor, Geography
We invite applications for an Assistant Professorship (tenure-track) position in Earth Systems Science Dimensions of Climate Change. Applications are welcome from those with a background in geography, earth sciences or environmental science, particularly those who take an Earth Systems Science approach to research on climate change at low latitudes (the tropics) in one or more of the following areas:
- Aquatic biogeochemical fluxes (terrestrial and/or coastal)
- Water resources
The position will sit within the Department’s Tropical Environmental Change (TEC) research group and will cover a research area of strategic interest in the National University of Singapore (NUS) and nationally, and aligns with substantial levels of research funding available at present and anticipated to remain so in coming years. TEC is concerned with the interactions of climate, water and landscapes at low latitudes, with emphasis on the Asia-Pacific region, and takes advantage of NUS’s physical location in Southeast Asia. TEC researchers recognise the critical need to improve understanding of tropical environmental processes and their importance to global change and resource security, and the physiographic consequences of rapid development, land-cover transformation, and climate variability.
The Department of Geography at NUS is ranked among the top Geography departments globally and offers Bachelors, Masters (taught and research) and Doctoral degrees. Although there are many overreaching and interconnecting projects and themes, our research and teaching are constituted through three groups: TEC; Politics, Economies and Space; and Social and Cultural Geographies.
The Department comprises an international mix of over 35 faculty and more than 300 undergraduates and 70 graduate students, the majority of whom are PhD students. Faculty continue to develop and shape research agendas in the global academic arena, while maintaining a strong commitment to graduate and undergraduate education. Recent initiatives include a taught MSc in Applied GIS and a new lab for geochemical analyses.
Qualifications and Expectations
Applicants must have a PhD in geography or an allied field, and be able to provide evidence, ideally in the form of a coherent body of publications in internationally-regarded journals, of high quality academic research. An interest – and ideally experience – in university-level teaching and in training the next generation of researchers is also required.
In terms of teaching and academic responsibilities, the successful candidate will be expected to:
- Contribute to the Department’s internationally recognised research activities;
- Teach a minimum of two modules a year at the undergraduate and/or graduate level and supervise graduate students;
- Perform administrative/service duties commensurate with a tenure-track appointment in the Department.
Location: Kent Ridge Campus
Organization: Arts & Social Sciences
The successful candidate will ideally start from 1 July 2021, or as soon as possible thereafter.
Candidates should submit an application that must comprise a letter of interest with details of research credentials, plans for research for the next 3-5 years and an analysis of their citation metrics (based on Web of Science data); a curriculum vitae (10 pages max.); and the names and contact details of four referees. If available, candidates should also include with their application evidence of teaching experience and student feedback. Evaluation of applications will commence on 1st February 2021 and will continue until a suitable candidate is found. Shortlisted candidates will be notified, and plans will then be made for a campus visit and interview. NUS offers a competitive remuneration package, including medical benefits, a period of subsidized housing, and relocation expenses (where applicable).
For more information on the position, please contact the Chair of the Search Committee, Professor Matthias Roth at firstname.lastname@example.org . Further information about the Department and NUS is available at: https://fass.nus.edu.sg/geog/ and http://www.nus.edu.sg/careers/whyjoinus.htm.
Only complete applications will be considered. We regret that only shortlisted candidates will be notified of the outcome of their application.
