The Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR) has been at the forefront of sound and vibration since its inception nearly 60 years ago. We have built an international reputation through pioneering academic research, strong and enduring collaborations with industry, and the generations of graduates who have spread throughout the acoustics profession. We have excellent vibration testing facilities including a large 6-axis motion simulator, and a suite of anechoic and reverberation chambers. In addition, we are currently making substantial investments to refurbish our research facilities and teaching laboratories for the next generation.

As a department within the School of Engineering, working at the ISVR offers unparalleled opportunities to collaborate with academics from different engineering disciplines and access to state-of-the-art facilities such as material and structure testing machines, wind tunnels and the µ-VIS X-ray imaging centre. The School has recently completed occupation of a new £122m innovation campus which is shared with Lloyds Register and home to the National Infrastructure Laboratory.

You will have a PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in Dynamics along with a proven track record in publishing quality papers in international journals. Ideally, you will already have demonstrated the ability to secure external research funding, and this will be a requirement for appointment at Associate Professor level. You will have clearly devised ideas for future research programmes, the drive to attract external funding and versatility to branch out into new areas. You will enjoy working in and contributing to a supportive and collegiate environment within the ISVR but will also seek opportunities to collaborate across the University, and with other world renowned institutions. Interdisciplinary research interests are strongly encouraged.

You will have excellent communication skills and be enthusiastic to embrace innovative teaching practices to enhance students’ experience and foster independent learning. Working alongside colleagues in the ISVR and the School of Engineering, you will contribute to large taught modules in mechanics related subjects but may also act as module lead, taking responsibility for curriculum design, module level assessment and quality assurance. Student projects form a key part of our engineering programmes and you will be required to propose and supervise innovative and exciting projects that provide excellent learning opportunities for our students.
