RESEARCH ASSISTANT FOR URBAN GREENERY RESEARCH

“Assessment of Visual Quality of Urban Landscapes in Health Promotion” is a Ministry of Education funded project to develop a means of firstly quantifying urban landscapes spatially through advanced 3D scanning technology and subsequently to assess their potential health benefits through statistical comparisons as well as physiological experimentation. The collaborative project is helmed by the National University of Singapore (NUS) with investigators from the Department of Architecture and the Department of Psychological Medicine as well as a collaborator from the National Parks Board of Singapore.

The Department of Architecture at NUS is thus inviting application for a Research Assistant (RA) position to be part of the project team. The successful applicant will be an integral part of this interdisciplinary research project and is expected to begin work in early 2021 and will end after 2.5 years, subject to performance reviews.

THE ROLE:

The RA will have knowledge of working with 2D and 3D data as well as show competencies in statistical and spatial analysis. The RF will work closely with the Investigators (PI and Co-PIs), Research Fellow (RF) and other members of the team towards a successful completion of the project. The RF will have a degree from a reputable university in urban greenery, statistics or other related fields such as, but not limited to, geography, landscape architecture, environmental science or computing.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Literature review
  • Data collection - identify, scan and digitally post-process urban environments
  • Assist in the conducting experiments of scans in a VR-like controlled setting
  • Presentation of data, e.g. spreadsheets, figures, charts, power point slides
  • Documenting and backing up of the research done in the form of raw data storage, written reports, journal articles and conference papers
  • Administrative tasks such as (but not limited to) procurement and reimbursements matters, preparing meeting minutes, manpower allocation, etc

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIRED SKILLS

  • A good university degree in urban greenery, statistics, geography, landscape architecture, environmental science or computing
  • Experience in 3D modelling software with an advantage for those with experience working with LiDAR or point cloud data
  • Experience in statistical analysis, specifically with spatial data (e.g. FRAGSTATS, R, MATLAB)
  • Experience in VR related research
  • Comfortable with outdoor fieldwork
  • Openness to intra-disciplinary research
  • Work in a pro-active and independent manner
  • Good background knowledge and overall interest in the effects of urban greening
  • Familiarity with the Singapore context will be an asset
  • Excellent communication skills (In English)
