Applications are invited for the post of Postdoctoral Researcher in the Department of Politics, International Relations and Philosophy

The Department of Politics, International Relations and Philosophy seeks a Postdoctoral Researcher to research the development of military learning processes in Estonia, Portugal and the Netherlands. Funded by the ESRC and under the supervision of Dr Tom Dyson, the researcher will contribute to the growing body of literature examining the intersection between military innovation studies and management studies. 

We seek a researcher whose interests and experience cohere around the broad areas of: organisational learning and military adaptation/innovation. The researcher will undertake original research, contributing to the design, conduct, and interpretation of research, and the identification of further areas of relevant research. The researcher will publish research results, co-authoring academic journal articles, a research monograph, and pieces aimed at non-academic audiences. They will present research results at seminars, workshops, and conferences, including workshops/events within the Dutch, Estonian and Portuguese militaries, NATO Centres of Excellence, and NATO’s Joint Analysis and Lessons-Learned Centre. The researcher will develop working relationships with military personnel and organisations across NATO member-states. 

Applicants should hold, or be close to completing, a PhD/DPhil in a relevant discipline such as management studies, political science or international relations. They should have extensive experience of conducting semi-structured interviews and independent fieldwork. The ability to conduct high-quality academic research evidenced in scholarly writing and publications in peer-reviewed journals commensurate with the applicant’s career stage is essential. Applicants should have the ability to distil complex research results for non-academic readers, an aptitude for cross-disciplinary working, and the ability to work collaboratively with non-academic partners, particularly in a military context. Applicants should possess excellent oral and written communication skills, organisational skills, and exemplary interpersonal skills with the ability to work proactively within a small research team. Experience of collaborative working with military organisations is desirable.

The post is full-time and fixed-term for 30 months, starting on 1 October 2021.
