ASSISTANT PROFESSOR / ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR / PROFESSOR

The position may be filled as assistant professor, associate professor or professor, depending on the candidates’ merits and career stage.

Requirements for the assistant/associate professor
An appointee to the position of assistant professor in the tenure track system shall hold a
doctoral degree, have the ability to conduct independent scholarly work and have the teaching skills necessary for the position. In addition, applicants for assistant professorships shall demonstrate their ability and motivation for an academic career through publications and other means.

When considering applicants’ qualifications, account shall be taken not only of their research work and teaching qualifications, but also of their success in obtaining external research funding, international research experience and other international experience.

Requirements for the professor

An appointee to a professorship shall hold a doctoral degree and have top-level scholarly qualifications, experience in the supervision of scientific research, as well as the ability to provide top-level research-based teaching and to supervise theses and dissertations. In
addition, the appointee shall present documentation of international cooperation in the field of research that he or she represents. Holders of professorships shall also have the skills necessary for serving as an academic leader.

When considering the applicant’s qualifications, attention shall be given to scientific publications and other research results of scientific value, teaching experience and pedagogical training, the ability to produce teaching material, other teaching merits and, if necessary, a demonstration of teaching skills as well as the applicant’s participation in doctoral education. Account shall also be taken of the applicant’s activity in the scientific community, success in obtaining external research funding, international research experience and international elected positions as well as leadership and interaction skills.
To ensure that the applicant’s ability to supervise theses and dissertations meets the requirements of the Faculty of Medicine, he or she must have completed the supervision of at least one doctoral dissertation.

The professor/associate professor/assistant professor is responsible for instruction in public health medicine in the Degree Programme in Medicine and the Degree Programme in Dentistry as well as for the planning, development and provision of specialist medical and dental training in public health medicine. The appointee is also responsible for the compulsory leadership and management training (10 credits) included in specialist medical and dental training, and contributes to teaching in the Master’s Programme in Social and Health Research and Management, as applicable.

The professor’s duties also include carrying out and supervising scientific research, following developments in research and participating in societal interaction as well as national and international cooperation in the field. In addition, the professor’s duties include other tasks assigned to the unit.

Applicants may demonstrate their practical knowledge of the field required for the position with a medical or dental specialist qualification or licence in public health medicine as well as with clinical experience acquired in the field.

The appointee and HUS Helsinki University Hospital may negotiate over a suitable secondary position.

The salary will be based on level 7 (assistant professor) and levels 8-10 (professor) of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal work performance.
