Institute for Atmospheric and Earth System Research (INAR) is a multi- and interdisciplinary research unit based in physics, chemistry, meteorology, forest sciences, environmental sciences and social sciences in the University of Helsinki. INAR aims to strengthen the internationally leading, integrated multidisciplinary research and education environment for atmospheric and Earth system science and to feed in scientific results for the national and international environment and climate policy. It performs multiscale research from molecular to global scale and focuses on climate change, air quality, biogeochemical cycles and ecosystem processes. INAR has INAR Finland Network partners in Finnish Meteorological Institute, University of Eastern Finland and Tampere University of Technology.

Faculty of Science invites applications for

POST DOCTORAL RESEARCHER POSITION
in the field of micrometeorology and biogeochemical cycles starting preferably in April 2021 or as soon as possible for 16 months employment contract. The subject is closely related to carbon cycling in boreal peatlands. The post doctoral researcher will focus on greenhouse gas (GHG) exchange data measured by the eddy covariance, collected from several northern peatlands to study the responses of ecosystems to contrasting years, and spatially extrapolate the results by means of remote sensing data. In addition to processing and analysis of GHG flux data and scientific writing, work might also include some student supervision. The successful candidate will be supported by and work with international research teams from Finland, Sweden, France, Canada, and US with a strong expertise regarding plant and ecosystem ecology, biogeochemistry and modelling of biological processes. In Finland, the closest collaborators are the Peatland and Soil Ecology Research Group in School of Forest Sciences (Univ. Eastern Finland), Finnish Meteorological Institute and Environ¬mental Change Research Unit ECRU (Univ. Helsinki).

We expect the candidate to have a PhD degree in agricultural, forest or environmental sciences, geography, micrometeorology, physics or related disciplines. The applicant should have good skills on analyzing large data sets and writing scientific text. Scientific skills shown in publication record, earlier successful experience in responsible positions in research projects and international collaboration are beneficial for successful candidate. The applicant is expected to have good skills in written and spoken English.

In total, the starting gross salary of a post doctoral researcher is typically about 3600-3700 EUR per month but depends on the appointee’s previous research and work experience. There will be a possibility to extend the contract after the 16 months.
