Research Associate (NUS COVID-19 community mitigation projects)

We are looking for a Research Associate with familiarity and analytic skills in qualitative and mixed methods approaches to undertake community research and support administrative aspects of the project. You will be part of an interdisciplinary team responsible for evaluation of community initiative to mitigate the risk of COVID-19.

As a Research Associate with a background is social sciences or health related disciplines you should be comfortable with both front-end and back-end research tools, including e-library search platforms and data management or analytic software as well as field data collection tools. You will demonstrate high IT proficiency, in particular the ability to work independently to become familiar with new and existing electronic systems as needed. You should be very comfortable with remote working and online communication platforms and genuinely keen to work as part of an extended - largely online - team as needed.

You will be team player with both a can-do attitude and all required technical research skills and with a specific interest in theory-based implementation research and evaluation methods. This position provides such a candidate an excellent opportunity to work and train with world leading experts in Infectious Diseases and Social Sciences across universities and public healthcare organizations. Build on existing skills the successful candidate will acquire the experience to contribute to improving community initiatives is response to the evolving COVID-19 threats to Singapore.

This is a fast paced and multifaceted position. The candidate should be able to work efficiently to produce timely and high-quality contributions as part of a cross-disciplinary team. Crucially, we require the candidate to be able to use initiative to compile their own task lists and problem solve how to achieve them as per the job-description and instructions, while working to involve senior management on core technical aspects.

Job Description

The appointed candidate will:

  • Lead the process of liaising across the teams and collaborators. Coordinate team meetings, support the drafting of meeting agendas and room bookings as needed.
  • Be responsible for administrative tasks such as budget amendments as well as helping to set up all service contract procedures. For example, drafting adverts, bidding and service requirements, recruitment and ensuring payments are completed as per contract agreements, working closely with finance and administrative offices.
  • Support project reporting and planning of research activities: e.g. helping to draft donor progress reports, supporting the Institutional Research Board (IRB) online procedures and submissions and amendments.
  • Be involved in systematic reviewing and reporting of the literature.
  • Be responsible for qualitative data collection and conducting own interviews. This will include independently organizing the sourcing and distribution of e-vouchers, data
  • management/ cleaning working in a wider team, ensuring quality of transcriptions and creating clear shared filing and data back-ups IRB compliant repositories.
  • Coordinate an e-survey working with the appointed survey company. Working independently to ensure complete and cleaned datasets are compiled and handed over ready for analyses.
  • Contribute to qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods data analysis and reporting.
  • Contribute meaningfully as a Teaching Assistant to selected online classes, including supporting technical tasks such and uploading teaching materials, managing breakout rooms using Zoom or Microsoft Teams as well as co-facilitating on interactive tasks.

Qualifications

Requirements

  • Strong grasp of latest IT technologies and ability to learn new ones quasi-independently, with the commitment to work effectively on digital platforms and through online communications as needed.
  • Excellent organizing and communication skills, showing the ability to listen and follow instructions whilst using initiative appropriately.
  • Demonstrable familiarity with research ethic board (IRB) e-submission procedures and requirements. Ability to support IRB preparations and amendments writing to the standard required for submission.
  • Commitment to follow approved IRB protocols ensuring ethical recruitment of appropriate candidates and consent taking which working effectively and collegiately in a wider team.
  • Experience of first authoring research reports or manuscript to a high standard. First or second authoring and publication in a reputable journal are preferred.
  • Ability to confidently present using PowerPoint at internal and external meetings.
  • Proficiency in literature reviewing and compiling of reference / citation lists from library searches, preferably using Mendeley. Experience is systematic reviewing from conception to analysis and reporting is desirable.
  • Demonstrable training and/or experience in qualitative approaches or commitment to learning a range of qualitative methods of analyses and related methodologies. Familiarity with data management qualitative software such as NVivo, Dedoose is desirable, and applied knowledge of Atlas.ti preferred.
  • Hands-on experience of cleaning and indexing quantitative datasets. Ability to use survey data to systematically select for sampling and recruitment of qualitative interviews, recording and indexing data collection using unique identifiers.
  • Demonstrable training and/or experience in quantitative research or willingness to work closely with quantitative members of the team to learn principles of quantitative analyses. Familiarity with steps in data cleaning, descriptive and predictive analyses using statistical software such SPSS or STATA etc. is desirable; proficiency in R is preferred.
  • Commitment to support teaching and to develop one’s own technical skills in line with course contents. Ability to seamlessly interface using online platforms and contribute to course set-up using these independently.
  • A Master’s Degree is social sciences or health related field.
